In an inspired new collaboration, they intersperse Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 3—one of the composer’s most traditionally “classical” works—with original poetry by prizewinning poet and multidisciplinary artist J. Mae Barizo. Even in its original form, this would be Carnegie Hall’s first performance of Glass’s symphony—but in the hands of The Knights, it’s something no audience has heard before. FWSO winds join the strings for Dvořák’s Serenade in D minor, which echoes the fiery rhythms of the Bohemian furiant.

Music reflecting on the horrors of war, performed by musicians from the hr-Symphony Orchestra from five countries whose grandfathers fought against each other in World War II – a concert of reflection, remembrance, and hope! With his String Quartet No. 8, the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich created a moving musical monument to the victims of fascism and war in 1960. The American composer Aaron Copland was deeply affected by the death of a lieutenant friend during World War II, an experience he processed in his only violin sonata, written in 1943. In "Tenebrae," the Romanian-Israeli composer Osvaldo Golijov draws on his own experiences, juxtaposing the violence of war with the tranquility of a planetarium and the hope for peace. Interspersed are two contemporary works by the American composer Jessie Montgomery and the Japanese composer Michiru Oshimas, which explore themes of peace and remembrance, opening the senses to profound reflection.

The interpretation of this piece has been hotly debated since its premiere, as many saw it as a criticism of the then dictator, thinly veiled behind exuberant adoration. While we may never know the true meaning behind the composition, one thing is for sure: Shostakovich’s orchestration and thematic development create an extraordinary piece that has continued to mystify listeners and scholars to this day.

Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Grammy Award–winning first opera dramatizes the life and work of poet-playwright Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated by Fascist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War for his socialist politics and homosexuality. His story emerges through the memories of Catalan actress Margarita Xirgu, Lorca’s muse—sopranos Angel Blue and Gabriella Reyes—who reminisces to her student Nuria, portrayed by soprano Elena Villalón. Lorca himself makes a dreamlike appearance, sung as a trouser role by mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack, and flamenco singer Alfredo Tejada completes the principal cast as the Falangist politician Ramón Ruiz Alonso, who arranged Lorca’s execution. Combining features of both an opera and a passion, Ainadamar, conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya in his Met debut, crackles with the energy and rhythms of flamenco and rumba, as well as the violent backdrop of civil war, all of which springs forth on the Met stage in a vivid company-debut production by Brazilian director and choreographer Deborah Colker, renowned for her work with Cirque du Soleil.

Sweden's Radio Symphony Orchestra meets Ukrainian musician colleagues on Ukraine's Independence Day. We will feel the presence of Ukrainian folk music, including in the newly composed Reflections on a Folk Song by Leonid Desyatnikov, but also experience music that borrows tones from completely different times and places, as in the modern classic Der Bote , where Valentin Silvestrov weaved together music by Mozart with a contemporary tonality. The music knows no borders, but the heart of this concert is in Ukraine.

The program includes "The Four Elements" by Colin Jacobsen, inspired by American Folk Songs as collected by Ruth Crawford Seeger, alongside the New York premiere of Andreia Pinto-Correia's "Aere senza stelle," Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110, and Osvaldo Golijov's "Tenebrae." Each piece offers a unique perspective on the theme, from Jacobsen's homage to American folk music and the beauty of our planet to Pinto-Correia's reflection on climate change and Golijov's contemplation on global violence contrasted with the beauty of Earth from space.

Drawing powerfully on popular and folk music styles, based on David Grossman’s experimental novel about parents’ grief at the loss of a child, Golijov’s urgently impactful piece is here presented in a semi-staged performance.

What happens when the natural order of things is upended? Falling Out of Time is a new work from the Grammy Award-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov performed by an ensemble of musicians, including some members of the Silkroad Ensemble, led by violinist Johnny Gandelsman. Rooted in David Grossman’s novel of the same name, this infinitely nuanced story in voices narrates a profound journey of grief and solace, a journey “out of time” as parents grieve the death of a child, a quest to comprehend a loss with no name.
It so happens that we all are, as a world, living in a moment in which the “natural” order of things has been upended. More than ever, we are in need of stories that help us make sense of the broken pieces. Falling Out of Time is one such story.

The New York Times reported that, “the words ‘superstar’ and ‘mandolinist’ still look odd next to each other. Yet in the classical music world they are starting to be joined with some frequency. Avi Avital was nothing short of electric.” The first mandolist nominated for a classical Grammy Award joins the adventurous Brooklyn Rider for an evening of virtuoso music for mandolin and strings.

Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is adored for its extremely catchy tunes and for its vivid depiction of early 18th century Italian life through the year. Several hundred years later the great Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla wrote his own version as an ode to Buenos Aires infused with melodic yearning and tango rhythms. Conductor Christopher Dragon leads the Orchestra and is joined by the young American violinist Elena Urioste for an evening of music in which different worlds reach out to one another.

Principal Percussion Wade Culbreath is featured in an intense program that contrasts an elegant string quartet from Haydn with an emotion-laden marimba/cello duo by the major international composer, Osvaldo Golijov. Last on the program is J.S. Bach’s Violin Partitia #3 transcribed for marimba.

Vivaldi was a master of his art in that he was capable of composing music which spoke more powerfully than words. The Four Seasons puts Vivaldi’s mastery on full display. For each season, there is a corresponding concerto which provides a vivid musical portrait. Argentina’s tango master, Astor Piazzolla took a different spin on this concept with his piece Four Seasons of Buenos Aires which exudes a distinct Latin flair.
Mobile favorite Chee-Yun will be returning to perform these incredible works. Her first public performance was at the age of 8 and by the age of 13 she had already performed with the New York Philharmonic. Since then, Chee-Yun has performed with many of the world’s foremost orchestras. She plays the Stradivarius “Ex-Strauss” (Cremona, 1708), which is on loan through the generous efforts of the Samsung Foundation of Culture of Korea and the Stradivari Society of Chicago, Illinois.

FOUR SEASONS (Golijov/Vivaldi/Piazzolla)

David Orlowsky is an ace on the clarinet: with him, the clarinet laughs, cries, sings, and laments as if it had a voice of its own. The expressive spectrum he coaxes from his versatile instrument is certainly tremendous. The clarinetist, who makes his debut with the Duisburg Philharmonic with this concerto, is equally at home in classical music and in klezmer music, which he first encountered through his mentor and teacher Giora Feidman. And this specifically Jewish musical tradition plays a central role in Osvaldo Golijov's suspenseful suite "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind," in which the composer tells a kind of history of Judaism—from its beginnings with Abraham to the present day. Olivier Messiaen's "Hymn" also has a religious reference, in this case to the "Holy Sacrament" of the Eucharist. Although the score was lost in the Second World War, the composer later reconstructed it from memory. In the second half of the concert, Robert Treviño , who courageously stepped in for Eun Sun Kim , who was ill at the Philharmonic's 9th Symphony in December 2022, conducts Jean Sibelius's Symphony No. 2, which evokes its creator's closeness to nature and the vastness of the Finnish landscapes. Also ingenious is the way the composer constructs an entire symphony from a small three-note motif at the beginning – right up to the grandiose finale.

There's nothing like a concert celebrating love in all its forms on the eve of Valentine's Day! Fauré's Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande (1898), both delicate and sensual, plunges into the mysterious world of Maeterlinck, where love is inextricably intertwined with fate. As for Prokofiev's Suite from Romeo and Juliet , taken from Shakespeare's masterpiece, it evokes all-consuming passion, between lyricism and heightened violence, leading us into the tragic drama of two star-crossed lovers. The three songs by the Argentinian Golijov (in 2002), originally written for the soprano Dawn Upshaw, are little gems inspired by poems by Sally Potter, Rosalía de Castro, and Emily Dickinson.

This new multi-media DACAMERA production features projections based on the paintings of Frida Kahlo.

In this novel collaboration, acclaimed saxophonist Steven Banks joins one of America’s most celebrated string quartets in a program called Musical Mystics.

Their Music in the Park Series program, Musical Mystics, will include the Minnesota premiere of Banks’ new work What’s Old is New for saxophone and string quartet, as well as his arrangement of Golijov’s The Dreams and Prayers of Issac the Blind, about the mystical Rabbi of Provence who eight centuries ago dictated a manuscript that foretold the future.
