Continuing on the creative relationship between acclaimed choreographer Jessica Lang and The Sarasota Ballet, the Company Premiere of Lyric Pieces presents an engaging and visually dynamic creation that wonderfully and artfully animates its dancers. Closing the 2023 – 2024 Season will be Sir Frederick Ashton’s Sinfonietta, an exciting and fiendishly difficult abstract work. A ballet in three parts, describing its second movement, dance critic Alastair Macaulay wrote for The New York Times that it was “remote, lunar, a brilliantly formal ceremony in white picked out against surrounding darkness.”

Conductor Katharina Wincor, who led the May Festival's 2022 production of Candide, returns to Music Hall and welcomes cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason for Shostakovich's raw and rhythmic first Cello Concerto.

Valerie Coleman’s now-famous Umoja for woodwind quintet and her Red Clay and Mississippi Delta open an evening of music that all seems to have been written for Tougaloo College’s Woodworth Chapel. Works by Mississippi-born William Grant Still reflect roots and Harlem blues, while the jazz piano ebullience of James P. Johnson’s Yamekraw is unleashed by piano soloist Stephen Sachs. The Native-American and African American infused melodies of Dvorak’s American String Quartet are an enchanting close to our concert season.

Dvořák saw a train roaring into a station and heard the melody that would grow into his Seventh Symphony. Tchaikovsky poured his heart into a Violin Concerto that dances as well as sings (and soloist Andrii Murza can do both). As for Bohdana Frolyak: well, her Adagio just speaks straight to the heart. Her fellow-Ukrainian Oksana Lyniv brings the same commitment to every note she conducts.

While writing his masterful eighth symphony, Czech Dvořák told a friend that “melodies simply pour out of me.” Indeed, this symphony is perhaps Dvořák’s most melodic, from the rhapsodic first movement to the electrifying finale. Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil has paired the symphony with one of Dvořák’s lively Slavonic Dances, originally composed as piano duets to earn some cash early on in his career. Finally, pianist Lukáš Vondráček takes to the stage for Czech-tutored composer Chopin’s first piano concerto, written at the tender age of 20.

The season finale opens with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in C-sharp minor, Op. 129, played by the Eureka Symphony’s incomparable concertmaster, Terrie Baune. His final concerto, Shostakovich’s work is wry, complex and fascinating. The season concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (From the New World). Written in Spillville, Iowa and premiered in New York in 1893, the New World Symphony is a beloved celebration of Dvořák’s time in America.

This concert features the Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen, who has frequently collaborated with the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, in a new work by Aida Shirazi. Since receiving her doctorate in music composition from UC Davis in 2021, Shirazi has been gaining attention far and wide for her acoustic and electro-acoustic music, which a New York Times music critic described as “unfolding with deliberation.” In Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony the audience will enjoy the composer’s Slavonic spirit in an energetic and varied musical landscape.

In his Violin Concerto, Korngold reworked themes from several of his film scores. Lush and romantic; the music certainly brings to mind the swashbuckling films of the period. With its full-throated lyricism and unbridled virtuosity the main theme develops in freely rhapsodic fashion, embellished with pyrotechnic passagework that ascends into the stratosphere. Remaining incredibly fresh and abounding with memorable melodies, the Ninth Symphony describes Dvořák’s spiritual and emotional journey from his intense longing for his beloved Bohemia to the thrill of the “New World” and its varied peoples. Kara Karayev forged his own distinctive use of native Azerbaijani folk music. The ballet The Seven Beauties brims with an exotic array of appealing rhythms and melodies.

DPAA honors Black Music Month by celebrating African American musical traditions. Florence Price, the first Black woman to receive national attention as a symphonic composer, blends Joplin-esque ballroom and ragtime idioms into her Dances. Dvořák’s New World Symphony embraces Black folk music, fusing it with the composer’s Bohemian heritage. On the second half of the program, a community choir joins the orchestra to recognize and recount the African American experience in song.

Accompanied by the Garsington Opera Chorus and the Garsington Opera Youth Company, the evening promises an array of highlights from operatic masterpieces by Beethoven, Britten, Dvořák, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Smetana, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi.

Anthony Manzo, solo bassist of San Francisco’s New Century Chamber Orchestra, makes his Festival debut in Dvořák’s sonorous and sunny String Quintet in G Major, and violinist Yura Lee and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári present a riveting dialogue of rhythmic complexity in Bartók’s vibrant Sonata No. 1. Dalia Stasevska lead the Orchestra in a sensational program of orchestral masterpieces. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra has become a fixture of the repertoire and serves as a showcase for the Fabulous Philadelphians. The work has a local connection having been composed in 1943 in Saranac Lake, NY. The evening closes with Dvořák’s joyous and triumphant Symphony No. 8, which has not been performed at SPAC in over a decade.

The incomparable Yo-Yo Ma, beloved by SPAC audiences, returns to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto under the baton of conductor Xian Zhang. Opening the evening are two SPAC premieres by composers Nokuthula Ngwenyama and Zoltán Kodály.

In this season-finale concert, violinist John Storgårds and pianist Kirill Gerstein play Janáček’s Violin Sonata, which is noted for both its urgency and lyricism, and, for the first time ever, Gerstein joins forces with the Dover Quartet for a performance of one of the standouts of the chamber music repertoire: Dvořák’s rousing Piano Quintet, Op. 81. The modal harmonies and improvisational feel of Janáček’s sonata coupled with the dumka and Bohemian dances in Dvořák’s quintet offers an invigorating taste of the folk music these two composers brought from their shared homeland and onto the international concert stage.

Week three of the Tippet Rise concert season features seven extraordinary artists, each celebrated for their virtuosity, and sought after for their performances around the world.
