Behind  "Last Spring" lies  Igor Stravinsky's *  Le Sacre du Printemps* , perhaps the key work in the history of 20th-century music and dance. Stravinsky's  *The Rite of Spring* caused a scandal at its premiere in Paris on May 29, 1913. Claude Debussy dubbed the work a "Massacre du Printemps" due to its immense musical dimensions. This was a total assault by the composer and the premiere choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, on traditional viewing habits, on the aesthetics of classical ballet, and on the insidious structures of power and hierarchy in the theater. In doing so, they opened a door to something entirely new, to our present day. Stravinsky was proven right: Paris quickly forgot its initial bad mood – *
