Fidgety Philip, Soup-Kaspar, Struwwelpeter, Johnny Head-in-Air, Conrad the Thumb-Sucker, the Pyromaniac Paulinchen, Evil Frederick & Co. – the stories of naughty children who meet a gruesome end are as legendary as they are controversial. Since their first publication by the psychiatrist and children's author Heinrich Hoffmann in 1845, these tales, intended to instill morality and "decent" behavior in boys and girls, have lost none of their gruesome fascination.
