On a ship voyage to Europe, the science-believing Walter Faber falls in love with the young Elisabeth, whom he calls "Sabeth." Faber offers to accompany Sabeth on her hitchhiking trip to Athens, where her mother lives. They spend their first night together in Avignon. Although Faber soon learns that Sabeth is the daughter of his childhood sweetheart Hannah, he represses the possibility that Sabeth could be his own daughter. In Acrocorinth, disaster strikes: bitten by a snake, Sabeth falls and hits her head on a stone. In the Athens hospital, overwhelmed by his emotions, Faber fails to inform the doctors of Sabeth's fall. The tragic consequence: the unwitting incest takes its moral toll
