Conceived and created by Skye McIntosh (Artistic Director of the Australian Haydn Ensemble), this immersive new multimedia work is inspired by the lives of 19th-century illustrators and naturalists Harriet and Helena Scott and their acclaimed ‘Butterfly Book’, Australian Lepidoptera and their Transformations. Drawing directly from the Library’s collection, it blends exquisite animations, theatrical performance and live classical music performed on period instruments.

Following the tale of an extraordinary family whose legacy helped shape Australia's scientific, artistic and cultural history — and inspired by original artworks, letters, books, manuscripts and family papers — the production travels across close to a century. From Regency England and the bushlands of Ash Island to the creation of the Mitchell Library itself, The Scott Sisters explores the enduring connections between science and story, art and nature and the many ways of observing, understanding and preserving knowledge across generations.  

Performed by the Australian Haydn Ensemble, with an exceptional cast directed by Rachel McDonald, stunning animations by Studio Gilay, and music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Marin Marais, Elena Kats-Chernin and Tullia Cairns, this evocative new work reimagines the Library's collection into a multi-layered live experience, celebrating curiosity, transformation and the enduring power of stories to connect us all.

It’s fitting, then, that French-American lutenist Thomas Dunford is at the centre of some of the most exciting early music-making of the moment. A regular collaborator with everyone from Les Arts Florissants to his own band of all-stars, the Jupiter Ensemble, he has been dubbed the ‘Eric Clapton of the lute’ by BBC Music Magazine. His debut solo CD, Lachrimae, received critical acclaim, earning the Caecilia prize, while his second CD, Labirinto d’Amore, was awarded the Choc from Classica magazine. Parisian lute virtuoso Thomas Dunford, often hailed as "The Eric Clapton of the lute" by BBC Magazine, brings centuries-old music to life with a modern pulse. Dunford's illustrious career has seen him share the stage with musical legends such as Bobby McFerrin and Anne-Sophie von Otter, and perform at prestigious venues including La Comédie Française, Carnegie Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2018, he founded the acclaimed Jupiter Ensemble, which quickly gained recognition with their debut dedicated to Vivaldi.

In this performance, part of the University of Chicago's Early Music Series, Dunford will present a program that spans the rich tapestry of early music. The repertoire includes masterpieces by John Dowland, such as "A Dream" and "Lachrimae," and selections from J.S. Bach's Suite for Cello in G Major, BWV 1007. The concert will also feature Marin Marais' "Les voix humaines" and "L’americaine," as well as well-known melodies by Erik Satie, including "Gymnopédie 1" and "Gnossienne." Additionally, works by Girolamo Kapsberger and Joan Ambrosio Dalza will be performed, showcasing the diverse and intricate beauty of the lute's repertoire.

The Baroque Performance Institute Orchestra, now in its 52nd season, will present an enchanting orchestral performance at Oberlin's Finney Chapel. This year's program, titled "Music of Paris and Versailles, 1660-1760," promises a captivating journey through the rich musical heritage of the Baroque era. The concert will feature a selection of works by renowned composers such as Jean-Baptiste Lully, Marin Marais, Jean-Marie Leclair, and Jean-Philippe Rameau. In Passions Revealed, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra takes you on a journey that dives into the rich, evocative, and stirring emotions found in works by Fasch, Locatelli, Vivaldi, Marais, Telemann, and Bach. 

The program explores a wide variety of colours and affects. We open with a rousing Fasch overture that conveys confidence and fearlessness. The strings are then featured in a hauntingly beautiful and wistful concerto grosso by Locatelli. A restless but ultimately hopeful journey through the night, from dusk to dawn, follows in Vivaldi's programmatic La Notte. We close the first half with a gorgeous celebration of love in the chaconne from Marais’s opera Alcyone.

The ACO returns to the historic Harlem Parish, the stunning location of its fall ’20 filmed production of The Chaconne Project. Now we assemble the same performers to Revisit that experience in this lively program of Baroque repertoire with a focus on the chaconne—a musical genre that evolved from the bawdiness of 16th-century Spanish street dances to the refinement of Bach’s Chaconne for Solo Violin. In the splendid acoustics of Harlem Parish, we showcase ten vibrant chaconnes that use various combinations of strings, plucked instruments, harpsichord, voice and percussion. Acclaimed Mexican lyric soprano Guadalupe Peraza dazzles with her “mellow, conversational” mezzo (Opera News) and emotional delivery, complemented by dance and hand percussion.
