When Kempten's Culture Night opens its doors, the foyer becomes a small world tour between Hungary, Romania and Spain. In the "Wundertüte Gipsy Night," fiery rhythms, virtuoso melodies and delicious aromas come together. Even before the concert begins, freshly cooked goulash – either classic or vegetarian – invites guests to the tables, before the stage turns into a musical carousel at 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m.

Luka Faulisi and David Bismuth have chosen to open this concert with the last of the three Sonatinas written in spring 1816 by a nineteen-year-old Schubert. It follows the four traditional movements, but with a concision that matches only the freshness of its inspiration. The Adagio by Mozart that follows has both the character of an opera aria and of a slow concerto movement (it also exists in a version with orchestra), while the Rondo (marked Allegretto grazioso) favors virtuosity more than lyrical expression. Virtuosity also has its place, as one might imagine, in the variations by Paganini on the duet "Nel cor più mi sento" from Paisiello's La Molinara, far more diabolical than Saint-Saëns's Danse macabre! While Lotus Land (after an original composition by Cyril Scott) and La Gitana are typical of Kreisler's taste for a certain picturesque quality, the Ménétrier, the first part of the cycle of ten Impressions d'enfance, transports us back into a Romanian folklore reimagined through Enescu's imagination. Finally, we will enjoy discovering a piece composed by the young pianist Kim Bernard (born 1999).

We must first welcome the return to Paris of the greatest violinist of her generation, Anne-Sophie Mutter, in a program that sums her up magnificently: Mozart, which she played as a child with Karajan, and a concerto very much of its time, written especially for her, which did so much for the glory of her instrument, Air , which Thomas Adès understands as a tribute to Sibelius. As a prelude and conclusion, the irresistible Romanian Rhapsodies of Enescu, a sign of the perfect communion between the National and its musical director.

Ravel, a true DNA of the Orchestre National de France's repertoire, especially in this year of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Between the menacing whirlwinds of La Valse and an extremely rare version of the Trio slips the Piano Concerto by his friend Gershwin, to whom Maurice Ravel once urged, when he came to ask his advice: "Be yourself!" This will be the roguish touch of this French gala between Paris and New York, under the fingers of the eternally young Rudolf Buchbinder.

Celebrated for his brilliant technique, charismatic stage presence and adventurous repertoire, Grammy nominee Robert McDuffie returns to Harris Concert Hall for works by Mennin, Enescu, and Tchaikovsky. The New York Times called Mennin’s Sonata Concertante “ a forceful, large work” and The New York Herald Tribune said it’s“as brilliant as it is solidly crafted…wildly energetic music, logical in its development, and neatly contoured.” George Enescu called his third violin sonata “In the Rumanian style.” It’s full of mesmerizing sonic effects which suggest other instruments in the piano part, and evoke insects, birds, and the human voice by the violin. It’s a technical and stylistic challenge for the performers and a fascinating otherworldly experience for the listener. Tchaikovsky’s sextet Souvenir of Florence was written “with the greatest enthusiasm and with the least exertion,” according to the composer. After completing it, he said, ““It's frightening to see how pleased I am with myself.” The pleasure audiences have taken in this melodious work has made it a recital hall favorite.
