NOVUS NY presents 20th Century Romantics on May 12, at 3pm, in Trinity Church, with works that challenged musical traditions of the time: Anton Webern's Langsamer Satz, Igor Stravinsky's Three Pieces for String Quartet, K019, and George Enescu's Octet in C Major, Op. 7. Free.

Prolific Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who was also a violinist, pianist, and accomplished author, is represented with her contemplative Partita for Orchestra. Internationally-acclaimed Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky joins TŌN for Hungarian composer Joseph Joachim’s Variations for Violin and Orchestra. Then the orchestra gives the U.S. premiere of a recently discovered concerto by famed Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. The program concludes with the energetic and passionate Second Symphony of Romanian composer George Enescu, written at a time when he was also one of the most in-demand concert violinists in the world.

See another side of Daniel Hope in this charming recital program with pianist and frequent collaborator Simon Crawford-Phillips. Romantic showpieces for violin and piano share the evening with the US premiere of a new work by beloved San Francisco composer Jake Heggie, inspired by Beethoven’s 1803 residency at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien.

Daniel Hope has toured the world as a virtuoso soloist for 25 years and is celebrated for his musical versatility as well as his dedication to humanitarian causes. Winner of the 2015 European Cultural Prize for Music (whose previous recipients include Daniel Barenboim, Plácido Domingo and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), Hope appears as soloist with the world’s major orchestras and conductors, also directing many ensembles from the violin. Since the start of the 2016/17 season, Daniel Hope is Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra – an orchestra with whom he is closely associated since his early childhood.

The last to occupy the violin chair in the legendary Beaux Arts Trio, the visionary violinist Daniel Hope makes his first recital appearance at Chamber Music Detroit with pianist Maxim Lando.  Their exquisite program conjures up “La Belle Epoque” when the beauty of Paris and Vienna dominated music making of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Context is crucial in New Century’s first collaboration with the students of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, featuring music that harnesses the sights and sounds of nature. American violinist Alexi Kenney leads the combined forces of New Century and SFCM in this unique multimedia program that immerses the audience on a journey from the Puerto Rican beaches of Angélica Negrón’s Marejada to the stark beauty of Joshua Tree National Park in Gabriella Smith’s Desert Ecology. A lush garden of sound blooms during the second half as our combined string ensemble performs Georges Enescu’s romantic masterwork, the Octet for Strings.

Edgar Moreau makes his NY Phil debut in Haydn’s spirited Cello Concerto No. 1. Leading the Orchestra for the first time, Andres Orozco-Estrada conducts Tchaikovsky’s passionate take on the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, and Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin Suite — an orchestral adaptation of the composer’s scandalous 1926 pantomime.

The Scottsdale Philharmonic is thrilled to present a musical evening of classical music, featuring works by Enescu, Dvořák and Brahms, at their hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona, on November 26th, 2023. 

Led by conductor Dmitry Polyakov, this classics night will introduce audiences to a sweeping programme of music from Romania, the Czech Republic, and Germany.  The night will open with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68, a beloved work written between 1855 and 1877. The orchestra will then move to a lighthearted segue into the Czech Republic’s Antonin Dvorak's Carnival Overture, Op. 92, written in 1891. And finally, the program will conclude with Romanian Rhapsodies, by George Enescu, a beloved musician making an international resurgence. An Orchestral Evening

Stars of the Symphony is an evening celebrating the enormous talent of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra musicians collaborating together in virtuosic roles. In this performance, members of the orchestra take the spotlight, from clarinetist Stas Chernyshev and bassoonist Josh Elmore in Strauss’ Duett-Concertino and percussionist Nick Sakakeeny in Toshio Mashima’s Marimba Concerto to Shields-Collins “Buddy” Bray with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Celebrated for his brilliant technique, charismatic stage presence and adventurous repertoire, Grammy nominee Robert McDuffie returns to Harris Concert Hall for works by Mennin, Enescu, and Tchaikovsky. The New York Times called Mennin’s Sonata Concertante “ a forceful, large work” and The New York Herald Tribune said it’s“as brilliant as it is solidly crafted…wildly energetic music, logical in its development, and neatly contoured.” George Enescu called his third violin sonata “In the Rumanian style.” It’s full of mesmerizing sonic effects which suggest other instruments in the piano part, and evoke insects, birds, and the human voice by the violin. It’s a technical and stylistic challenge for the performers and a fascinating otherworldly experience for the listener. Tchaikovsky’s sextet Souvenir of Florence was written “with the greatest enthusiasm and with the least exertion,” according to the composer. After completing it, he said, ““It's frightening to see how pleased I am with myself.” The pleasure audiences have taken in this melodious work has made it a recital hall favorite.

Ioana Cristina Goicea is one of the outstanding violinists of her generation. She won First Prize at the 2017 Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand, with critics praising her passionate performance and describing her as “a new star in the musical firmament.
Pianist Chih-Yi Chen’s versatile qualities as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist have distinguished her as a rarity amongst pianists. Her work with the talented young violinists of the Indiana University Violin Virtuosi directed by Mimi Zweig garnered her recognition as a specialist in violin repertoire, and she has since become a sought-after collaborative pianist.

The Dover Quartet joins forces with the Escher String Quartet for a unique concert experience.

Two of the hottest chamber music groups in America today, the Kennedy Center’s quartet-in-residence, the Dover Quartet, and the Escher Quartet share the stage for a rare all-octet program. The Escher is “one of the major string quartets playing today” (Bachtrack), and the Dover is “the young American string quartet of the moment” (The New Yorker). Both are winners of the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant and have turned heads in the chamber music field, and now join forces to show off their distinct styles and explore the depths of music composed for octets. The program includes three works for string octet, each composed by a teenaged musical prodigy.

Pianist, Cédric Tiberghien, and violinist, Alina Ibragimova, first met in 2005 as members of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists. Creating a unique partnership shortly after, the duo has gone on to perform throughout Europe and in North America, appearing at major venues including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall, and the San Francisco Performance Series.
