Jonathan Leshnoff’s Elegy, commissioned by our Music Director Yaniv Attar in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, is a deeply moving work resounding with beauty and introspection. Sharon Farber’s Concerto for Cello and Narrator blends powerful storytelling with the soulful voice of the cello in a unique and captivating experience. The cello, along with a narrator, recounts the story of an actor who survived the Holocaust and saved an American pilot and 150 Jewish children. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”), a masterpiece that celebrates heroism and the triumph of the human spirit.

The fourth concert opens with More Seasons by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Michael Abels. Celebrated for his ability to seamlessly blend genres, this work sets the stage for Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30 by Victor Herbert. The orchestra will be joined by internationally acclaimed cellist Amit Peled to perform this piece from the late Romantic era, bringing forth the soulful richness of the cello in a dialogue with the orchestra. We conclude with Beethoven’s iconic masterpiece that has transcended centuries – Symphony No. 5 in C minor, with its opening four-note motif being one of the most recognizable in the world.

Celebrating the timeless legacy of Antonín Dvořák, the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic joins forces with the talented musicians of our Youth Orchestra for an unforgettable side-by-side concert. Showcasing the depth and breadth of Dvořák's oeuvre, the program features his beloved Cello Concerto in B minor featuring virtuoso cellist Amit Peled. The orchestras shine in a lively rendition of Dvořák's Slavonic Dance No. 1, capturing the folkloric spirit and rhythmic vitality of this beloved collection. Concluding the concert with Symphony No. 8 in G major, both ensembles unite in a grand finale, bringing Dvořák's lyrical melodies and lush orchestrations to life with passion and unity.

Amit Peled and  frequent collaborator Noreen Polera provided  a concert for Redwood Arts in a Zoom in December 2020.  They now will appear live in two performances at the Occidental Center for the Arts on March 11 at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm playing piano and cello sonatas by Bach, Barber and Shostakovich.
