This Thanksgiving, explore cultural roots and the concept of “home.” Simon’s Tales draws on African American folklore, traditions, and spirituals, while Bielawa connects to violin solist Tessa Lark's American roots in Appalachia in her work PULSE. Copland’s theme from Appalachian Spring, based on the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts,” evokes simplicity, peace, and community. In contrast, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, written during a period of personal struggle, reflects his Czech heritage and the political turmoil of his homeland.

The Louisville Orchestra presents an evening of groundbreaking music. Showcasing the orchestra’s commitment to innovation, this program features three contemporary works from new and former Louisville Orchestra Creators Corps composers including Anthony Green’s Ev’ry Time I Blink, Chelsea Komschlies’ A Hidden Sun Rises as well as the highly anticipated world premiere of Lisa Bielawa’s Violin Concerto, a bold new commission written for violinist Tessa Lark. Complimenting these fresh voices is Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony, innovative in its own day for its exploration of nature’s changing landscapes in symphonic form.

90.5 WUOL Presents the Louisville Orchestra’s Season Opener “Our Kentucky Home” featuring special guest Chris Thile. We open our Season celebrating many things Kentucky in this concert featuring composers, performers, and compositions related to our great Commonwealth! Included in the program is mandolinist extraordinaire Chris Thile, who gives the Kentucky debut of a piece for mandolin and orchestra called ATTENTION! A narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra. We also share works by Bartók and Prokofiev, inspired by folk and classical music from around the world.  Plus, we’ll spotlight a work by Creators Corps veteran Lisa Bielawa and Hazard resident Lindsey Branson.

Our “In Harmony” tour concerts of 2023 are a celebration of Kentucky and Americana, the traditional and the new, the spirited and the serene. The Louisville Orchestra — under the baton of Teddy Abrams — brings an exciting program of orchestral favorites and thrilling new works to residents all over the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Bernstein kicks it off with his hugely popular Overture to Candide, Rossini gives us a bit of “Hi Ho Silver” in his William Tell Overture, and Tchaikovsky wraps up the program with his rousing 1812 Overture. Experience contemporary pieces by two composers of the LO’s Creators Corps: Kentucky native Tyler Taylor debuts new composition In Memory’s Safe — featuring fellow Creators Corps composer Lisa Bielawa as vocal soloist – alongside TJ Cole’s original work Megalopolis. Then, sing along with an arrangement of Blue Moon of Kentucky, and revel in the jazz themes of Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, performed by Teddy Abrams conducting from the piano.

BMOP continues its extended 25th Anniversary celebrations with a trip to Carnegie Hall. Featuring three works originally commissioned, premiered, and recorded by BMOP, "Play It Again" provides the capstone to the first 25 years of BMOP's mission.

Andrew Norman's Play, Lei Liang's A Thousand Mountain, A Million Streams, and Lisa Bielawa's In medias res all receive their New York premieres on the historic Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage in Carnegie Hall.

When do two “Fifths” make the whole world take notice? When they are Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Fifth Piano Concerto. Beethoven makes his piano solo part soar with freedom and brilliance but also shares the most tender nocturne in the delicate tension of the sublime middle movement. “Beethoven’s Fifth” is called the most well-known music in the world and has even been sent to the universe as a sound sample on the Voyager probes of the 1970s.
