Embark on a musical journey through the whimsical realms of imagination with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic's opening concert of the 2024|2025 Season, "Fantastical Explorations." Leading the audience through a landscape of wonder, the program features compositions that vividly paint fantastical landscapes. Female composer, Dan Wei, sets the stage in her new work “The Dancing Moonlight” with its rich tapestry of orchestral colors inviting listeners into a world of boundless thought and creativity. Continuing the exploration, Leoš Janáček's "Symphony Fantasy” from his opera Jenůfa, delves into the emotional depths of fantasy.  Josef Suk's "Scherzo Fantastique" evokes a sense of playful enchantment through his innovative use of sonic parameters and expressive melodies. The mesmerizing concert finale "Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra" by Philip Glass showcases the virtuosity of timpanists Glenn Paulson and Scott Christian in a dazzling display of rhythmic intensity and prowess.

Join us for an electrifying evening with the Albany Symphony's Dogs of Desire on Friday, June 7, 2024, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the EMPAC Theatre, located at 44 8th Street, Troy, NY. This genre-bending new music ensemble, under the baton of David Alan Miller, will present a groundbreaking concert featuring world premieres by some of today's most adventurous American composers, including Dai Wei, Francisco del Pino, Nicky Sohn, Juhi Bansal, JURAKHAN, and Jack Frerer. The program promises an unforgettable experience with compositions like "All on a Summer’s Day," "Memorial," "Crossway," "Refuge," new works by JURAKHAN, and innovative arrangements of hits by NY-born songwriters, including classics such as "Just the Two of Us" and "If I Had a Hammer."

CAN WE EXPLORE THE UNEXPLORABLE? Guided by Dai Wei’s Invisible Portals, this program opens a doorway to unexplored realms. Augustin Hadelich, whose performances “[reveal] something from a plane beyond ours” (The Washington Post), joins LACO in Mendelssohn’s transportive Violin Concerto in E minor, capped by Mozart’s eternal “Jupiter” Symphony.

What a glorious beginning to our 2023-2024 Classics Series! Music Director Eric Jacobsen and the Orlando Philharmonic present the celebratory opening concert featuring Mussorgsky’s “gallery crawl” (in Ravel’s glittering orchestration). Come along as your “mind’s ears” conjure the ten pictures on exhibit—including baby chicks pecking their way out of their shells, eerie Parisian “Catacombs,” and “The Great Gate of Kiev” shaking you with the tumultuous pealing of bells in the grand finale. Bella Hristova (The New York Times praises her “expressive nuance and rich tone”) steps into the spotlight for Barber’s Violin Concerto, exploring its serenity, angularity, and shifting accents that demand formidable virtuosic abilities. Dai Wei’s The Dancing Moonlight dazzles with energetic verve and rhythmic flair to start the concert.

They are joined on the program by piano sensation Yefim Bronfman, one of the newest additions to the faculty, in award-winning interpretations from the concerto repertoire.

Yi-Wen Jiang’s string quartet arrangements of popular Chinese folk melodies are at the heart of our celebration of the Year of the Horse—a symbol of independence, growth, and free spiritedness in Chinese culture. A dynamic scene of whinnying, galloping equines comes to life as the cello and piano take on an arrangement of Haihuai Huang’s Racing Horses—another folk song originally written for the erhu, a traditional two-stringed instrument from China.
