Collaboratively created by Grammy Award-winning musical director Martha Gonzalez, Alpert Award-winning interdisciplinary artist Virginia Grise, and directed by Kendra Ware, Riding the Currents of the Wilding Wind is an all-in-one concert, album, and live theater performance. Stories from Their Dogs Came with Them by Helena María Viramontes are brought to life in a multifaceted sonic landscape —a mix of Mexican and Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, funk, rock and gospel— performed by Martha Gonzalez, Tylana Enomoto, Juan Perez, and actor Lulu Matute. The music is matched by a rich visual world created by set designer Tanya Orellana, video artist Yee Eun Nam, lighting designer María Cristina Fusté, and costume designer David Arevalo.

Meant to preserve, celebrate, and uplift the bolero tradition in Los Angeles, Boleros De Noche returns to take us on a journey through the world of the classic Puerto Rican romantic ballads with Trío Remembranza, one of the top active bolero groups from the island. The evening also features a special performance by Martha Gonzalez—a Grammy Award-winning Chicana musician, composer, feminist music scholar, and founding member of the band Quetzal—who will perform an all-bolero repertoire.

As the culmination of her one-week residency at Texas Performing Arts, writer Virginia Grise invites the audience into her creative and collaborative process. Together with musical director Martha Gonzalez, they will discuss the evolution of their latest project, Riding the Currents of the Wilding Wind, inspired by Helena María Viramontes' epic novel Their Dogs Came with Them. From sharp shooters to earthmovers, roaming dogs, helicopters in the sky, quarantines and men that fly, the performance lecture chronicles the page-to-stage process of adapting the novel in a medium security women's prison in Goodyear, Arizona with a team of collaborators from both inside and outside the prison and the site-specific staging of the play under the I-19 Freeway in Tucson, Arizona with a community cast of scholars, organizers and actors. The artists will give a sneak peek into the songs currently being created for the concept album Riding the Currents of the Wilding Wind as they grapple with the question: can art set our people free?
