Named by The Economist as one of Twenty Living Polymaths, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career and a longstanding international following as a pianist with those of composer and writer. He is the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and only classical pianist to be knighted this century. One of the most distinctive artists of his generation, Hough’s awe-inspiring range and command is even more astonishing live, worthy of every superlative that he’s been given.

The Castalian Quartet is rapidly emerging as an exciting voice on the international chamber music scene. This young European ensemble, based in London, has swept competitions, including a 2016 award from the Banff International String Quartet Competition.

In an ingenious chain of inspirations spanning 220 years, the Castalian String Quartet’s program—and the Turnage commission featured on it—mark the 100th anniversary of Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata quartet. For his new quartet, Turnage returned to words by the Beethoven sonata’s original dedicatee for inspiration. The Castalian Quartet are “a feisty group, with a real personality and strong interpretative ideas”.
