Adrian Brendel’s eloquent artistry, praised by the Guardian for its ‘quiet, unobtrusive musicality,’ will be familiar to Wigmore Hall audiences, thanks not least to his performances as a long-serving member of the Nash Ensemble and frequent collaborations with like-minded artists. He is joined this evening by Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon, a consummate chamber musician renowned for the clarity and singing line of his playing.

The musical evocation of light is at the heart of this program created by Hungarian conductor Gergely Madaras, which opens with the incandescent Symphonic Minutes by his compatriot Ernst von Dohnányi. A treasure trove of inventiveness, these subtly contrasting orchestral miniatures offer a captivating introduction to Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto . Under the fingers of pianist Élisabeth Pion, a young rising star from Quebec who has won numerous international awards, this solar score is a declaration of love to a young pianist who had captivated the composer.

This program’s four stars of Hungarian music, from the ultra-Romantic Franz Liszt to the ground-breaking György Ligeti, reveal the breadth, color, and infectious energy of their country’s music and folk culture. Closing the performance is Ernő Dohnányi’s first published work, composed around age 17, of which Brahms said that he “could not have done it better” himself.

The Sestetto Stradivari, composed of members of the Orchestra dell' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, has earned an excellent reputation since its founding in 2001. Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts Mendelssohn’s Fifth Symphony, known as the “Reformation” for its celebration of the Protestant church; its music turns Martin Luther’s hymn “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (“A mighty fortress is our God”) into a triumphant oratorio without words.

When the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) last appeared on this stage, The New York Times called the performance “nearly indistinguishable from what any fine orchestra out to make an impression at Carnegie Hall might present.” The most notable difference? The “infectious joy evident onstage.” As part of Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week (WOW!), celebrating outstanding youth ensembles from around the world, conductor Iván Fischer leads the orchestra and acclaimed pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason in a program that includes Mahler’s First Symphony; Dohnányi’s Variations on a Nursery Tune, Op. 25; and a brisk opening piece by Anna Clyne.

Richard Strauss's Sonata in E-flat major for Violin and Piano, Op. 18, will transport the audience to the Romantic era with its lush harmonies and expansive melodies. Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, will offer a vivid musical storytelling experience, while Ernő Dohnányi's Quintet No. 1 in C minor for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 1, will captivate with its emotional depth and thematic development.

The performance will feature an exceptional lineup of musicians, including Orion Weiss on piano, Lun Li and Danbi Um on violin, Paul Neubauer on viola, Sterling Elliott on cello, and Ricardo Morales on clarinet. One of America’s most eminent black composers of the early twentieth century, H. T. Burleigh wrote hundreds of art songs and introduced Antonin Dvořák to the spiritual. Southland Sketches, his suite for violin and piano, illustrates the American style that Burleigh did much to promulgate. By contrast, Dohnányi’s C minor Piano Quintet radiates high drama from first note to last. Britten’s second String Quartet, commissioned in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Henry Purcell’s death, was coincidentally composed following Britten’s recital tour of the newly-liberated concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Britten’s admiration for Purcell’s “clarity, brilliance, tenderness, and strangeness” as well as his horror of war’s depravity find voice in this deeply emotional work.

Music’s leading figurehead at the culmination of the Romantic era, Johannes Brahms remains unsurpassed in his emotional range and innovative spirit, both of which laid an inspirational groundwork for a generation of composers to come. One such composer was Hungarian Ernő Dohnányi, whose Sextet in C major owes its formative elements to Brahms. Pair this work with two Brahms trios of profound originality, and audiences will not be able to help but feel moved.

Conductor Bar Avni, winner of the 2024 La Maestra competition and principal conductor of the Bayer Philharmonic, leads a luminous program. Born in 1987, she is establishing herself as one of Europe's most promising conductors. Alongside her, Anaëlle Tourret, principal harpist of the NDR Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, performs Dohnányi's Concertino for Harp and Chamber Orchestra , an elegant late work (1952) that blends virtuosity with pastoral gentleness. The Opéra Junior Choir, prepared by Albert Alcaraz, opens the evening with Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols (1942), written during an Atlantic crossing for women's choir and harp. This is followed by Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring , a pastoral love song set in rural America. Finally, Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra , variations on a theme by Purcell, playfully presents woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion in turn, before bringing them together in a grand final fugue. A choral and symphonic program, poised between gentleness and brilliance.
