At the end of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet (1602), almost everyone is dead; including Hamlet's lover Ophelia, who is declared insane during the course of the play and ultimately drowns – the exact circumstances of which remain unclear. How could this story be continued and retold?

From darkness to light, from west to east: The season's final concert invites you on a multifaceted journey. Alongside Thomas Nidecker's world premiere, two more recent masterpieces are on the program. One of them is "Black Trees" by Sarah Nemtsov: "It's a nocturne," says the German composer. Commissioned as part of the Beethoven Year 2020, she approached Ludwig van Beethoven in an unusual way: through the idea of ​​stacked, sculptural layers of paint, a painting by her mother, the artist Elisabeth Naomi Reuter, and poems by Sylvia Plath. Due to the COVID pandemic and the resulting cancellation of the premiere, the work was somewhat forgotten. In 2025, it was revived with several performances, and not only the composer is delighted that it is now making its way to Basel under the baton of guest conductor Jonathan Stockhammer.
