What is your taste in art – more modern, abstract, or figurative and representational? What do your friends like? And do you realize the potential for conflict that lies dormant within these differences? Yasmina Reza's comedy *Art*, which premiered in Paris thirty years ago, explores the art of friendship with rapid-fire wit and rhythmic, melodic language. It tells the story of Serge, Marc, and Yvan, whose bond is threatened by a contemporary monochrome painting. The question of taste becomes a fundamental one, and the end of their long-standing friendship seems imminent. It's no longer just about art, but about each other's tolerance. There's no accounting for taste – or is there?

While in Shakespeare's time feuding families stood in the way of the lovers, today it's rigid ideologies and their prejudices. Romeo and Juliet become Robin Hood and Wonder Woman. At least, that's how Steve and Kate meet at a costume party. He's a committed feminist, she's more into the macho type. So, after getting down on one knee, there's no engagement ring, but rather a sincere apology for the patriarchy. If that weren't contradictory enough, an emancipated political activist also encounters a Jewish religious conservative – the parents of the lovers. If one were to assume their differences are insurmountable, the opposite poles only attract each other more strongly. But perhaps their own children's wedding isn't the most appropriate moment for this. And to make the whole romantic spectacle even more complex, the ex-boyfriends get involved. And all of this is embodied by just two actors.

How to Date a Feminist

The plan is: to say nothing on this stage tonight. Five minutes of silence against the noise of the world. Silence to avoid immediately knowing what needs to be said and done. Silence to avoid accusing others of untruth or intolerance. Because outside the protected space of the theater, opposing positions now exist that make peaceful silence impossible. But in here, silence must be conceivable, because the stage can channel and capture the perpetual stream of words, thoughts, and attributions, and could become a place of contemplation. Simply remaining silent, however, is harder than expected and drives the characters from silence into chaos. As beautiful as the idea was, now one crude story chases the next, and every actor vies for the audience's attention with new vanities. And so much for silence.
