Sunday Chamber Music – 2

BFO Rehearsal Hall

Welcome to a concert with Esbjerg Ensemble's own musicians as soloists and with oboe, horn and percussion at the center.

Look forward to Gerald Finzi's beautiful  Interlude in A minor , played by our oboist David Daniel Dinu, where the interaction with the homogeneous sound of the string quartet emphasizes the lyrical sound of the oboe. And to Jovilet's Sérénade , where the oboe is again at the forefront of the soundscape, but in the interaction with the rest of the ensemble retains its chamber musical expression.

The wind quintet has the challenge, as well as the benefit, of bringing together five distinct instruments to explore multiple blends of timbres. Klughardt's work is a beautiful example of great writing for each of the five, and the addition of piano in Louise Farenc's Sextet provides expanded sonic dimensions and is a true tour de force for the pianist. The program is balanced with smaller combinations featuring double reeds, the regal sound of the horn, and upper winds.

The chamber concerts are a unique opportunity to experience classical music's most intimate moments - and get closer to the members of the symphony orchestra. The concerts are composed for the occasion by the musicians themselves according to personal taste and according to which works they think challenge and emphasize their combination.

The Ancient Greeks believed that the flute was the oldest of all musical instruments, created by the god Pan himself. Debussy’s retelling of that myth is at the heart of this ravishing recital from the Orchestra’s flautist Helen Wilson: an evening of magical melody and wondrous new sounds.

An instrument that is usually well hidden in the orchestra – and a couple of composers that history had forgotten: this concert offers new discoveries and hidden gems.

In Jolivet's fantastic bassoon concert, we get to hear Aarhus Symphony Orchestra's solo bassoonist, Maksim Karpinskii, unfold. And there will be plenty of opportunity for that: Jolivet's bassoon concerto is not just one of the most difficult written for the instrument – it is also one of the best wind concertos of the 20th century.
