Think of this as a musical stroll through Paris. No passport required. Led by Chelsea Gallo, the program moves from the elegance of the concert hall to the glow of café lights and the drama of the stage. You’ll hear the dreamy beauty of Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune, the fiery intensity of the “Roxanne Tango” from Moulin Rouge, and the lush, cinematic sweep of Alan Menken’s Beauty and the Beast Suite. Along the way, TFO’s James Riggs takes center stage in Jean Françaix’s The Flower Clock — a charming, colorful showcase for the oboe. Romantic, playful and full of atmosphere, it’s Paris brought to life in sound.

In France, the musical clock ticked differently in the 20th century than in Germany: Jean Françaix, who never composed in an avant-garde style, who remained grounded in tonality, who wrote entertaining, humorous, sentimental, and light-hearted music, is deeply revered in our neighboring country as a serious composer: something like that would never have happened here.

In the Octet in F major, Franz Schubert showcases his entire artistry. It combines lightness and depth, dance-like rhythms and intimate melodies that sound like a familiar conversation among friends. He was inspired by the famous septet of his predecessor Beethoven, but created something entirely unique: music that sounds like a great adventure, where each voice - from the string quartet to the clarinet, bassoon, and horn - brings its own character.

This concert transports us to Paris to celebrate legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger and some of her remarkable students. From Aaron Copland to Astor Piazzolla to Quincy Jones, many young talents sought her guidance, solidifying her legacy as the Grande Dame of 20th-century composition. The program also includes works by Stravinsky, whom she admired and advised on several of his pieces, music by her talented sister Lili Boulanger, and the G minor Piano Quartet of her own teacher, Gabriel Fauré.

Once and never again: Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy each composed only one string quartet, and in the large chamber music oeuvre of Jean Françaix there is only one string trio. Remarkably, Debussy published his string quartet in 1894 as String Quartet No. 1 - so he was planning further works in this genre. Françaix's string trio is one of his earliest compositions and is still a favorite with audiences today. The Pasquier Trio alone, for whom Françaix wrote his string trio, played it in over 1,000 concerts. Despite the positive reception, no sister work followed. Ravel's string quartet is also a unique early work that he composed as a student at the Paris Conservatoire for the competition for the prestigious "Prix de Rome". Ravel's fifth and last attempt to win the Rome Prize ended in a scandal that cost the director of the conservatory his job. This, too, has only happened once in the history of the venerable Conservatoire.

Next is Jean Françaix’s Trio for Violin, Viola, and Cello, a lively and witty piece by the 20th-century French composer known for his sparkling textures and playful charm. The program concludes with Dvořák’s Quartet in E-flat Major for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 87, a work that weaves Czech folk-inspired melodies with the rich lyricism and vitality of Romanticism, ending the program on a joyous, radiant note.

Claude Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) caused a stir in the music world. Some saw it as a major musical work of impressionism. For others, it marked a turning point towards new music at the threshold of the 20th century. Pierre Boulez even said, "One could say that modern music begins with l'après-midi d'un Faune." Debussy found such classifications rather annoying. He wanted to create music "that lives in nature," as he said. And he gave the "Prélude" a transparent, softly flowing tonal language, dreamy flute and harp sounds and - in keeping with the main character - a lascivious, shimmering expression.

Francis Poulenc, the real joker of the Groupe des Six, created a precious treasure of five works for the woodwinds - the sextet, a trio and a sonata each for flute, clarinet and bassoon. With the sparkling Sextuor for piano and winds, a showcase for the "musical prose" sought by the Six, he thrusts us into the heart of the pulsating life of his hometown of Paris. The three-movement piece was completed in 1932, but was thoroughly revised in 1939 for the performance with Poulenc himself at the piano. At the beginning it sounds like the Grands Boulevards, everything is noisy, running, honking, shouting and whirling around, and immediately the woodwinds are allowed to bring their entire arsenal of modern acrobatics into play. The middle movement is more idyllic, before the fast section suddenly seems to be a fairground bustle. The work concludes with a hymnic declaration of love to the Seine metropolis.

Awartime injury forced the talented conductor André Caplet to give up his post as musical director at the Paris Opera. And so the musician, who was born in Le Havre in 1878, soon devoted himself entirely to composition. As a pupil of Claude Debussy, he abandoned his teacher’s Impressionism in favour of the avant-garde, for example in the music he composed for the modern concert harp. In 1919, Caplet wrote a »Fantastic Tale« for harp and string quartet inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s story »The Masque of the Red Death«. The work wonderfully captures both the dark and ghostly atmosphere of the tale while reflecting on the composer’s own experiences of war.

A war injury forced the talented conductor André Caplet to give up his post as musical director at the Paris Opera. The musician, born in Le Havre in 1878, soon devoted himself solely to composition. As a student of Claude Debussy, he overcame the impressionism demanded by his teacher and moved closer to the avant-garde - for example, by composing for the modern concert harp. In 1919, Caplet wrote a "Fantastic Tale" for harp and string quartet, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Masque of the Red Death". The work musically captures the dark and ghostly atmosphere of the story and processes his own war expeiences.

Our summer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church comes to a close with a program in which Principal Horn Jessica Danz showcases her instrument’s elegance in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4—jubilant, playful, and filled with the reminiscent sounds of hunting calls. Danz then conquers Villanelle, written by Dukas as a challenging exam piece for horn, sharing the soul and virtuosity of the instrument. The evening begins with Lutoslawski’s Overture, where the sharp sounds of the strings fill the intimate venue with an intensity that directly contrasts with the work that follows, Françaix’s light and delightful Sérénade. There are two milestone quintets featured in this program by Mozart and Beethoven respectively, referencing one another both in their scoring and key signatures. After the premiere of his Quintet, Mozart wrote to his father saying ‘I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.’ With extensive sketches in existence for this piece, it was clearly a project Mozart had laboured over – surprising for a composer not usually known for rewriting material. Beethoven takes his lead from Mozart in his youthful Quintet, written in his twenties when he was exploring the sonic possibilities of instruments in a chamber setting. We’re also presented with two trios in this concert, one by the French neoclassical composer Jean Françaix and another lively offering by the German Romantic composer Reinecke.
