But first, a celebration of our superb Chorus as they shout for joy in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and share a new masterpiece by one of the New World’s most innovative living composers, Caroline Shaw.

The esteemed and popular Alexander String Quartet has enlivened SF Performances seasons for more than three decades, joined by Music Historian-in-Residence Robert Greenberg. Together they explore in music and words some of chamber music’s most intriguing and important composers, their works, lives, and times. Looking back to the early years of the last century, the Quartet and Greenberg will explore the rich history of bright innovation and creation during often dark times.

The Carnegie Mellon Chamber Series brings together members of the Carnegie Mellon Faculty and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for outstanding music making in an intimate space.

The Clarion Quartet, featuring David McCarroll, performs works written during the Holocaust by Jewish composers, featuring instruments for part of the performance on loan from Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh.

Spend a magical evening under the stars with friends and family this summer as the SF Symphony returns for four concerts at Frost Amphitheater on the Stanford University campus. Join us for some music al fresco at the tree-lined lawn of this beautiful outdoor venue!

In his New World Symphony, Antonín Dvořák frames his impressions of the music he heard in America through the lens of his Bohemian roots. Led by Joshua Weilerstein, the program opens with Alexi Kenney performing Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, an impassioned showpiece written by a composer whose first love was the violin.

Curtis Institute of Music students perform over 100 free recitals during the semester, held on most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. Admission requires advance registration and is complimentary.

Music of the Holocaust

This concert follows the previous day’s screening of Martin Goldsmith’s deeply moving film Winter Journey. It includes works by composers who were silenced as victims of the Holocaust, as well as works performed by the Jüdischer Kulturbund.

For the second time this season, chief conductor Joshua Weilerstein tackles one of Mahler's great symphonies – this time the 4th, which is considered the most accessible to listen to. Beautiful and immediate in its expression - and sonically breathtaking. Where the theme of his second symphony was the resurrection and the third the earthly life, the theme here is the heavenly life. Quietly we ascend to heaven, and it all culminates in the beautiful fourth movement, where an angel sings of paradise – here delivered by the excellent Swedish soprano Miah Persson.

Shostakovich’s massive 11th Symphony was inspired by a revolution that failed, and from the roar of the crowds to the thunder of gunfire, it’s never seemed more relevant, or more urgent. Guest conductor Jakub Hrusa understands the power of history, making this a timely and thrilling climax to a concert of contrasts.

Janacek’s beloved Mladi (‘Youth’) was written towards the end of his life as a nostalgic celebration of memories of his youth, drawing on his early writing. Receiving its premiere performances in autumn 1924, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this iconic piece for wind, featuring the bass clarinet alongside a regular wind quintet line-up of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Also featured in this concert is Janacek’s expressive masterpiece for solo piano ‘In the Mists’ and two works from wind and piano by his most illustrious student, Pavel Haas.
