From 1962 until his retirement in 2002, he served as professor of conducting and ensembles at Eastman School of Music. Die 94. Symphonie von Joseph Haydn ist ein Ertrag seiner ersten London-Reise 1791/92. Im Deutschen trägt sie den Untertitel „mit dem Paukenschlag“, im Englischen, knapper und erhellender: „The Surprise“. Ob der überraschende Paukenschlag wirklich die Zuhörer*innen wecken sollte – wir wissen es nicht. Dass aber diese Symphonie eine der charmantesten, elegantesten und unterhaltsamsten des Meisters ist, das lässt sich mit Bestimmtheit sagen! Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) darf man den wichtigsten britischen Komponist*innen des 20. Jahrhunderts nennen. Solokonzerte sind in seinem Schaffen wenig vertreten, gleichwohl ist das Konzert für Basstuba und Orchester von 1954 kein exzentrischer Scherz, sondern ein Meisterwerk! Die „schottische“ Symphonie von Felix Mendelssohn hat ihren Ursprung in seiner Bildungsreise nach England, wo ihn besonders Edinburgh beeindruckte. Die dort empfangenen Eindrücke bilden die Keimzelle für diese Symphonie, die, obwohl als Nr. 3 bezeichnet, Mendelssohns letzter Beitrag zu dieser Gattung ist.
