The Orchestra Now Resident Conductor Zachary Schwartzman returns with the orchestra to Symphony Space for another free concert. The concert opens with Strauss’s beloved tone poem Don Juan. Then tenor Ryan Michki, a winner of the 2024 Bard Conservatory Concerto Competition, performs Vaughan Williams’ emotional English song cycle On Wenlock Edge, written after the composer had spent three months studying with Maurice Ravel in Paris. Also on the program are Steven Stucky’s arrangement of Purcell’s Funeral Music for Queen Mary, originally composed 330 years ago in 1695, and Samuel Barber’s epic and expansive Symphony No. 1 in One Movement.

With this concert, Sir Donald Runnicles assumes his position as chief conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic and simultaneously opens our British Festival. The evening, full of European and British music history, begins with Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis," a deeply emotional and majestic piece that highlights the beauty of the English music tradition. William Walton's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra puts the larger sister of the violin in the spotlight. With virtuosic solo passages and dynamic orchestral accompaniment, this piece creates goosebump moments and showcases the viola in all its versatility and expressiveness. The crowning finale is Johannes Brahms' Fourth Symphony, a masterpiece that initially faced challenges at its inception. Its beginning appeared too abstract to contemporaries. Today, 140 years after its creation, the poetry of this beginning, the exuberance of the third movement, and the solemnity of the finale make Brahms' Fourth one of the most beloved symphonies of all time.

Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is a timeless favourite, though its debut was a disaster, leading Sibelius to withdraw it. Thankfully, he later reworked the piece into a breathtaking masterpiece. Composed while living in the Finnish countryside, its soaring melodies evoke Nordic landscapes. Anders Hillborg’s King Tide also captures nature’s essence, portraying a desolate terrain swept by a piercing wind. Similarly, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Sixth Symphony reflects a world scarred by two world wars. With its unrelenting drama and powerful opening, this symphony leaves a profound impression.

In A Sea Symphony, his only full choral symphony, Ralph Vaughan Williams gives voice to the drama and spirituality of the ocean, bringing musical life to sea poems from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The English composer worked on this monumental piece for seven years in his quest to match the power of Whitman’s words. New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Conductor Gemma New returns after leading us in our lauded 2023/2024 season performance of Vaughan Williams’ Antarctic Symphony. A Sea Symphony is paired with American composer Gabriella Smith’s Lost Coast, a piece for cello and orchestra that expresses wonder and grief for Earth’s last wild places.

Regularly voted one of Britain’s favourite pieces of classical music, Vaughan Williams’s Tallis Fantasia is at the heart of this fabulous programme of English music. John Wilson is in demand at the highest level across the globe, having conducted many of the world's finest orchestras over the past 30 years. Britten’s Serenade is one of his best loved works and the programme ends with the musical fireworks of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra. Add in lush music from two other fine English composers in Howell and Delius and we have a wonderful programme of truly gorgeous music.

A concert about the skies above us, beginning with Lera Auerbach’s cinematic description of the Ancient Greek mythological hero Icarus who killed himself by flying too close to the sun, followed by Ralph Vaughan Williams’s most popular piece, The Lark Ascending, a miniature violin concerto in which the soloist represents a tiny skylark on a spring day, flying higher and higher into the heavens and pouring out their love in cascades of folk-inspired melody. The concert ends with Gustav Holst’s evergreen and spectacular orchestral suite The Planets, describing the seven planets of ancient astrology, each with their own mysterious properties which shape our human lives and characters.

Embark on a maritime adventure with the Calgary Phil as the Orchestra performs three sea-inspired works. The MSO welcomes Eric Jacobson, “an interpretive dynamo” (The New York Times) to conduct Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, a work of tragic grandeur flecked with sunlight. MSO Principal Tuba Robyn Black takes center stage for Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto, which begins with a brisk march, ends with an energetic flurry of sound, and showcases the unique qualities of the instrument throughout. We can often understand music even better when we hear the words it is based on. In a delightful blend of concert and reading, the Studio Orchestra Duisburg and narrator Natalia Hüskens juxtapose musical and lyrical pairs of works—concrete, as in the artistic encounter between Gabriel Fauré and Paul Verlaine, or Ralph Waldo Emerson and Charles Ives, but also imaginary ones. Antonín Dvořák drew inspiration for his "Czech Suite" from the sounds of his homeland, while Mendelssohn Bartholdy found it for his "Hebrides Overture" in the magnificent natural scenery of Scotland. What would the appropriate poems sound like? The first serenade concert provides the answer.

What would the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival be without "its" castles and manor houses, which the team explores and performs in throughout the country? For its 20th anniversary, the festival launched the "Sleeping Beauties" series to highlight historical monuments that were in decline and urgently needed to be saved. From a bird in flight to the astrological personalities in our solar system to the vast mysteries of deep space, Leonard Slatkin presides over a night that invites audiences to look upward at the Southern California sky in wonder. The Hollywood Bowl was a family tradition for Los Angeles native Slatkin who grew up watching LA Phil performances from the benches. That family tradition gains a new chapter as Slatkin leads the orchestra in his son Daniel’s Voyager 130, which was inspired by the Golden Record on NASA’s Voyager spacecraft that carries Earth’s music to the edge of interstellar space.

Proms at St Jude’s often takes place during Pride Month, and tonight − nearly 55 years to the day since the first Pride marches in June 1970, following the 1969 Stonewall Uprising − we celebrate three LGBTQ+ composers and the immense contribution they have made in the history of classical music. Caroline Shaw is the youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music and described Entr’acte as ‘like a minuet and trio, riffing on that classical form but taking it a little further; [it] suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition’. American Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music in the world – it was used at Franklin Roosevelt’s funeral and after JFK’s assassination − and Tchaikovsky’s heartfelt Serenade for Strings is considered to be one of the late Romantic era’s definitive compositions.

If you’ve heard our guest conductor Antonello Manacorda in action at the Royal Opera House, you’ll know that he aims straight for the heart of everything he conducts. So expect elegance and joy in Mozart’s exuberant Overture to The Magic Flute, and pure energy when he joins RPO Artist-in-Residence Johan Dalene to perform the piece with which Dalene shot to fame in 2019: the powerful Violin Concerto by Carl Nielsen. It’s possible that no one alive plays it better.

Join BBC Radio 3 for a FREE lunchtime invitation concert with the Ulster Orchestra, shining a spotlight on 20th century English composers on 22 May 2025 at Belfast's Ulster Hall.

The programme opens with a short overture by John Foulds, who was born in Manchester in 1880 – the son of a bassoonist in the Hallé Orchestra. A skilled and adventurous composer, his music largely fell out of favour after his death in 1939. However, it enjoyed a revival in the 1980s, leading to a performance of his Three Mantras at the BBC Proms in 1998. His Overture to Le Carbaret was composed in 1921 for a play about the 19th century French mime artiste, Jean-Gaspard Deburau. Foulds reworked it in 1934 and it’s light-hearted style, full of verve and swagger, is a hit with audiences.

At a time when the continent was celebrating with great verve a final indulgence in grandiose late romanticism, then the battle to turn away from tonal "harmonious sounds" was fought and finally the search for absolutely "new" sound systems was carried out, the English composers were above all taking time: time to reassure themselves through composition of the wealth of English folklore, the beauty and diversity of "their" landscape, the sublime greatness of cultural tradition and the power of English wit, time to find a musical-English identity, time to make England a characteristic musical nation again. And so there is a lot going on in this concert: Ralph Vaughan Williams ("Charterhouse Suite") and Gerald Finzi (Romance op. 13), both associated with the so-called English pastoral school, paint enchanting still lifes and transport their listeners to a wonderful English dream world.
