The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music proudly announces its 2024 season opener, "PARADE," set to take place on Friday, August 2, at 8 PM at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. This remarkable evening marks the beginning of the Festival's 62nd season, under the baton of Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, featuring the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra.

The concert will showcase an array of West Coast and World Premieres by contemporary composers, reflecting on themes of community, solitude, and the transformative power of storytelling. The program includes Vivian Fung's "Parade," inspired by the San Francisco Lunar New Year parade, capturing the essence of community amid solitude and reflecting on the journey from isolation to togetherness experienced during the pandemic. Helen Grime's Violin Concerto, featuring the virtuosic talents of Leila Josefowicz, offers a mesmerizing experience of contrasts in a single continuous movement. Nina Young's "Tread Softly," commemorating the centennial of the 19th Amendment, reflects on the Women’s Suffrage movement and the ongoing struggle for gender equality and representation. The evening will also feature the world premiere of Karim Al-Zand's "Al Hakawati" (The Storyteller), with soprano Miriam Khalil, exploring the essence of storytelling through scenes from an opera in progress.

The event begins with an outdoor Pre-Concert Talk by Music Director/Conductor Cristi Măcelaru and guests, offering insights into the evening's program. A special alfresco dinner, prepared by Sunny’s Catering, will be served outside the Civic Auditorium, with advance tickets required for the meal.

Fresh off a celebration of Rachmaninoff’s 150th anniversary, Kern performs his Second Piano Concerto — a success from its inception, this memorable concerto’s themes that have been borrowed by countless films, Sinatra songs, and more. After intermission, Colorado Public Radio’s Kabin Thomas narrates the outlandish tale of Peer Gynt, a hopeless yarn-spinner who lies and sneaks his way through many misadventures and ultimately learns his lesson. Audiences will immediately recognize Grieg’s music, including the unforgettable “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and “Morning Mood.” Guest conductor Gemma New leads this crowd-pleasing program, which opens with Vivian Fung’s inspirational Prayer.

Internationally recognized as one of the world's finest quartets, the American String Quartet has spent decades honing the luxurious sound for which it is famous. The Quartet celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2019, and, in its years of touring, has performed in all fifty states and has appeared in the most important concert halls worldwide. The group’s presentations of the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Bartók, and Mozart have won widespread critical acclaim, and their MusicMasters Complete Mozart String Quartets, performed on a matched quartet set of instruments by Stradivarius, are widely considered to have set the standard for this repertoire.

The Second Symphony of Sibelius is fierce and triumphant, itself a source of Finnish pride.

Conductor Rebecca Tong leads the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in this celebratory program that honors Women’s History Month. Violinist and Sphinx collaborator Melissa White returns to Hilbert Circle Theatre to perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto. The program also features six female composers from around the world, including Brazil, the United States, China, Canada, Indonesia, and Mexico. Florence Price was a trailblazer who created a successful career at a time when there were few opportunities for female composers. The rest of the composers featured continue to blaze trails in the 21st century with their wide range of styles and perspectives, standing at the forefront of classical compositions today.

In a partnership with the California Festival: a Celebration of New Music, this Chamber Music Tuesday features SFCM alumni ensemble L'Arc Trio in performance with students. The concert also features two new and exciting works by Bay Area composers Jonathan Bingham and Vivian Fung, as well as one of Ernest Bloch's greatest chamber music works. Fung’s piano trio Ominous Machine was written for the L’Arc Trio and the performance will be a world premiere. Emerging Black Composers Project winner Jonathan Bingham wrote his string quartet Pareidolia in 2022 for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

The Grant Park Orchestra welcomes the sensational young conductor Gemma New for Tchaikovsky's thumping Piano Concerto No. 1. The program includes American composer Samuel Barber's late-Romantic Symphony No. 1 and a piece inspired by the very skyline that lends so much majesty to the Festival's environs — Vivian Fung's Aqua, written after the skyscraper of the same name designed by Chicago architect Jeanne Gang.

Also returning to Cheboygan will be the American String Quartet who performed here in 2021. The American String Quartet has long been one of America’s leading string quartets. They are celebrating their 50th year as an ensemble. The American String Quartet will present a program including Beethoven’s last quartet, his opus 135, sometimes referred to as “It must be,” referring to a section of the middle movement that seems to ask the question and answer it, “Must it be?” Also on the program is Vivian Fung’s “Pizzicato for String Quartet”, Pulitzer-Prize winning contemporary composer, Caroline Shaw’s “Blueprint,” and finally ending with Ravel’s Quartet in F major.
