At our guest performance at the VR Bank Bamberg-Forchheim OPEN AIR at Jägersburg Castle, we will present several highly musical works under the direction of Dinis Sousa and accompanied by violinist Tianwa Yang. The program begins with the sparkling overture to Le nozze di Figaro : an epitome of Mozart's temperament, whose rapid precision and dazzling wit immediately transport the listener into the vibrant world of his opera.

During our guest performances in Würzburg, we will present several highly musical works under the direction of Dinis Sousa and accompanied by violinist Tianwa Yang. Stravinsky's piece was composed in 1946 for the 20th anniversary of the Basel Chamber Orchestra. On the surface, it resembles the Baroque concerto grosso, but is ingeniously interwoven with sonic elements of the 20th century. When asked about its content, the composer replied in his typically laconic manner: "That the work is for string orchestra – you will see immediately; that it has three movements – you will read that in the program; that it is anything but atonal! – Won't you let the audience have the pleasure of discovering it for themselves?

Look forward to a reunion with the wonderful violinist Tianwa Yang. In 2022, she received perhaps the most important award for a soloist: the OPUS KLASSIK "Instrumentalist of the Year." In the 2022/23 season, we hosted Tianwa Yang as our "Artist in Residence," and in 2024, we toured China with her. Whether there or at our joint concerts in Germany, audiences everywhere fell at her feet.

French music is a matter close to Simon Gaudenz's heart – and at the same time, it forms a repertoire that is still too rarely the focus of attention in Germany. Its magic lies in its subtle distance: sounds like fleeting scents, shimmering plays of color, transparency, and rhythmic precision create soundscapes of enchanting beauty. In this spirit, André Caplet's delicate cantata "Tout est lumière" resonates, as does Ernest Chausson's heartfelt "Poème" and Maurice Ravel's concert rhapsody "Tzigane" – masterfully interpreted by Tianwa Yang.

Guest performance by the Cologne Philharmonic

Hardly anything is more fitting for the spring days than Bruch's famous violin concerto - first performed in Cologne at Whitsun 1868 - and Robert Schumann's 1st Symphony, which he himself called his "Spring Symphony". Both works are characterized by blissful and edifying sounds with unmistakable genius.

Works whose creators themselves did not think would one day be world famous: Johannes Brahms, a pianist by training, had already premiered his first piano concerto and the music world was eagerly awaiting a violin concerto by the 45-year-old. After all, Beethoven and Mendelssohn had presented masterpieces. The reviews were devastating: the conductor Hans von Bülow was of the opinion that the work was written less "for" than "against the violin", virtuosos such as Henryk Wieniawski called the piece "unplayable". Nowadays, this concerto is an indispensable part of a violinist's repertoire.

The fact that Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy dedicated a concert overture to the beautiful mermaid Melusine goes back to an experience he had had while attending the opera. While Mendelssohn was hardly enthusiastic about the music, the old mythical material and, not least, the convincing performance of the protagonist quickly inspired him to compose his own piece - and he managed to create a moving atmospheric picture of profound beauty. Antonín Dvořák's 5th Symphony is just as bright and light, revealing the young composer's mature and personal style. With its Bohemian tone, it is often referred to as Dvořák's Pastorale .

2nd Philharmonic Concert / Unknown Beauty

The intoxicating influences of Spain dominate both Ravel’s syncopated and sinuous Boléro and his humorous Alborada del gracioso. Continuing the travelogue are Debussy’s colorful Ibéria, and the talented Tianwa Yang tackles the exhilarating Violin Concerto composed for Jascha Heifetz by Miklós Rózsa.
