Choreographer

Under the direction of choreographers Josépha Madoki and Maud Le Pladec, the dancers of the Ballet de Lorraine bring to life a history of the concerto, from Vivaldi to Bach.

Bringing together eight musicians from Les Arts Florissants and twenty-four dancers, Concerto danzante embraces a broad and unique form to celebrate the art of dialogue. This dialogue defines the concerto—between soloists and orchestra—but also the interplay on stage between Baroque music and contemporary dance, abstraction and expressiveness. The creation is rooted in the history of a form born in the early 18th century among Venetian dance masters, to which Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi gave its prestige. Josépha Madoki—a leading figure in waacking, a dance characterized by rapid and fluid arm movements, which originated in West Coast American clubs in the 1970s—will offer a bold interpretation of Vivaldi's concertos. Then Maud Le Pladec – director of the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine – will embrace the complex structures of Bach's pieces with the formal rigor and poetic abstraction that mark her writing.
