Tugan Sokhiev conducts Tchaikovsky’s youthful First Symphony, nicknamed Winter Dreams for its cozy evocation of Russian winters. Chopin’s exuberant Piano Concerto No. 1 features Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva, described by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as “a one-woman powerhouse” who “stole the show.” Andrzej Panufnik’s Heroic Overture, composed in 1952, is a tribute to the courageous spirit of the Polish people.

Georg Muffat’s words are as relevant today as when he wrote them in 1695. Here, musical styles range from his French-infused dances to Andrzej Panufnik’s unique recreation of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century musical fragments from Poland that were almost lost to the ravages of war. Our season culminates with an Italianate symphony by the Ukrainian composer Maxim Berezovsky.

Our celebration concert includes two orchestral masterpieces that will showcase the talent of the Orchestra. The ever-popular Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov is dazzling and dramatic, thrilling audiences with musical adventures based upon the tales from The Arabian Nights. Also on the program is the spectacular Sinfonia Sacra by Panufnik. The work, composed in 1963, begins with a trumpet fanfare and contains meditative sections for the strings that develop into astonishing full orchestra crescendos. It is recognized as one of Panufnik’s most popular works.
