Britta Byström’s Voyages extraordinaires was inspired by the enchanting (and impossible) journeys depicted in Jules Verne’s famous novel series. Her own work is intended as a fantastical musical journey on which the listener encounters new worlds of sound through recurring orchestral transformations. So, bring a thirst for discovery to the 2024 Nordic Music Days festival – this year in Glasgow – which celebrates contemporary music and sounds from Scotland and the Nordic region.

Sound becomes color in the world premiere of composer Pius Cheung’s marimba concerto alongside Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra.

We luxuriate in endless shades of sound in a program that centers around the world premiere of internationally renowned and Eugene-based composer Pius Cheung’s Hibiki (Colors of Resonance), performed by marimba virtuoso Eriko Daimo. The textures and timbres of the orchestra are on full display as they perform Hildur Guðnadóttir’s meditative People Get Faces and Claude Debussy’s fantastical and poetic Prélude, before each section of the orchestra is celebrated in Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra.

Journey into the beyond with Daniel Hope and New Century as they offer music for communing with spirits, whether connecting with those we’ve lost or outwitting death for another night! Mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor joins the orchestra in a candlelit, otherworldly setting to examine connections with the afterlife from many cultural angles, including a world premiere commission by Nicolás Lell Benavides that summons the spirit of Doña Sebastiana, Lady Death of the American Southwest.

Composer Nicolás Lell Benavides premieres a new work commissioned by New Century, a piece for violin and strings that summons the spirit of Doña Sebastiana, Lady Death of the American Southwest.

Experience the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights through the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's special concert event on Saturday, 5th April 2025, at 8:00pm. Held at the prestigious Symphony Hall in Birmingham, this unique musical journey promises to transcend the conventional boundaries of classical music, blending it with the rich and diverse sounds of modern Icelandic music.

Curated by the innovative conductor and composer Robert Ames, the evening will feature an exceptional programme that includes works by members of the iconic band Sigur Rós and the acclaimed composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, known for her work on the soundtracks of The Joker and Tár. This concert is a celebration of Iceland's vibrant music scene, where classical musicians frequently collaborate across genres, from soundtracks to pop and heavy metal, creating a rich tapestry of sound.

The programme will showcase arrangements by Robert Ames of Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Kanguru" and Hildur Guðnadóttir's "Ascent", alongside Geoff Lawson's arrangement of Ólafur Arnalds' "Momentary", David Handler's arrangement of Jonsi & Alex Somers' "Boy 1904", and a piece by Kjartan Sveinsson, "Der Klang Der Offenbarung des Göttlichen".

Under the baton of Robert Ames and featuring the voices of Ex Cathedra, this concert is set to be an unforgettable exploration of epic landscapes and musical innovation. Tickets are priced between £26 and £62, with a per-ticket commission of £3.50 for tickets over £15. Attendees can also benefit from multi-buy discounts and reduced prices for students, 18-30s, under-18s, and benefit recipients.
