Ethel Smyth's Serenade in D invites us to a sunny day by the sea. The romantic lightness of her composition leads us to John Pickard's The Flight of Icarus, where the sea witnesses Icarus' dramatic flight and fall. The Flight of Icarus is not only a mythological story but also an ecological warning. Through Pickard's work, the sea becomes not only a scene but also a voice that speaks for the vulnerability of nature and the need to protect our planet.

For much of his life, Johannes Brahms felt the omnipresent weight of Beethoven’s shadow looming over him but by the time he reached this, his third and perhaps most stirring symphony, he had emphatically found his own unique voice and flourished into an icon in his own right. The Third is richly Romantic, featuring sweeping, lyrical string lines and beautifully autumnal woodwind passages that make this symphony a delight from start to finish.

Laquita Mitchell is the soprano soloist in Barber's poignant evocation of American life as seen by a young child. Ethel Smyth takes the listener on a journey from nostalgia to mirth to triumph. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson employs an eclectic mix of musical styles; his Sinfonietta No. 1 is by turns searching and pensive, then rushes to a dramatic finale. A brooding piece for strings by Julia Perry begins the concert.

Conductor James Blachly serves as Associate Editor and Orchestral Liaison for the Metro Detroit-based African Diaspora Music Project (ADMP), directed by University of Michigan professor Dr. Louise Toppin. The ADMP database has thus far compiled more than 1,300 published works for orchestra by African diaspora composers, including those by Perkinson and Perry. The DSO is proud to highlight the work of the ADMP with these performances.

Operatic singers auditioned from around the globe to participate in the IC Opera Studio where they were staged in scenes guided by directors earning a professional certificate from the IC Opera Direction Program. The participating directors have been working since January with stage director Chuck Hudson, while the singers have been working with musical director Christopher Zemliauskas, along with conductors and acting coaches.

Packed full of musical imagery, Ethel Smyth’s “The Wreckers Overture” is a perfect opening for this concert. Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů’s richly imaginative “Rhapsody-Concerto for viola and orchestra features the virtuoso soloist Ivo Bokulic. The evening concludes with “Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi the orchestral painter who commanded a palette of spectacular range. The Roman landscape is evoked by his transformative visions and memories.

Founded in Leipzig in 1992 by five singers from the famous Thomanerchor, amarcord – a name that means “I remember” in the Emilia-Romagna dialect – is part of this new generation of a cappella choirs that has no qualms about breaking down barriers between genres and eras. Together with Daniel Hope's violin and Simon Crawford-Phillips' piano, they plan to take the audience on a journey through half a millennium of creation, from Thomas Tallis to Benjamin Britten.

Present and mature in his playing, a critic wrote after a concert at a German festival about Guido Sant'Anna, born in 2005 in Säo Paulo in Brazil. Sant'Anna won a chamber music prize at the Menuhin Competition at the age of 12, where he was the first Brazilian ever to enter. The youngster said in a small homemade video that he was looking forward to meeting violinists from all over the world, making friends and having fun. In 2022, at the age of 17, he won 1st prize in the Fritz Kreisler Competition – both competitions founded on the shoulders of great violin virtuosos who were aware of young violinists and the opportunities they should be given.
