One of the young talents of Danish music – the Randrusian Magnus Plejdrup – will perform as guest conductor in a program with three symphonies by Leopold Mozart, WA Mozart and Franz Schubert. Magnus Plejdrup is educated as a composer and conductor at the Jutland Conservatory of Music and has also studied conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland in Glasgow. He is the leader of the Aarhus Chamber Orchestra and has conducted the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Opera orchestra during his studies in Glasgow. Magnus Plejdrup was awarded the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize in 2022 and received the audience prize at the Randers Chamber Orchestra's composer competition in 2021 with the work "Randers".

This January, Conductor Emerita Gisèle Ben-Dor leads Pro Arte through an adventure of music and storytelling that will thrill your whole family.  In The Story of Babar, the tale of a little elephant’s journey from orphan to king is accompanied at every turn by Francis Poulenc’s picturesque music. Our young soloist shines in the irrepressible finale of Joseph Haydn’s first cello concerto. Sensemayá, by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, is a spellbinding depiction of an Afro-Caribbean ceremony in which a ritualist must subdue a snake. Our program ends with the riotous Toy Symphony, in which playful instruments like a triangle, a rattle, and a cuckoo whistle all try to steal the spotlight.

Musik aus Salzburg und Wien, dem Geburtsort und der Wahlheimat von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Er selbst ist mit einer frühen Sinfonie, die er als 15-Jähriger komponierte, sowie einem seiner virtuosen Hornkonzerte aus den Wiener Jahren vertreten. Dass sein Vater Leopold nicht nur ein engagierter Prädagoge, sondern auch ein veritabler Komponist war, stellt sein Konzert für zwei Hörner und Streicher unter Beweis. Parallel zu den Mozarts lebte und arbeitete Johann Michael Haydn in Salzburg, der jüngere Bruder von Joseph Haydn. Als Kirchenmusiker gewann er Renommee, darüber hinaus aber auch als Komponist von Sinfonien und anderer Instrumentalmusik. Einer der Wegbereiter der klassischen Sinfonie wiederum ist Georg Christoph Wagenseil, der in der Kaiserstadt Wien um die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts zu einem der führenden Musiker aufstieg und die nachfolgende Komponistengeneration maßgeblich inspirierte.

Join us for an exceptional musical showcase featuring the talented Dustin Nguyen on trombone, as part of his Master of Music recital. This event is scheduled for Sunday, May 12, 2024, at 2:30pm CDT, held in the historic Lutkin Hall at Northwestern University. Dustin, a distinguished student of Michael Mulcahy, will be accompanied by Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio on piano.

The recital will include a diverse repertoire with selections from Alexander Scriabin arranged by Ralph Sauer, the Concerto for Alto Trombone by Leopold Mozart, the Trombone Concerto, Op. 114 by Derek Bourgeois, and a unique arrangement of Errol Garner's "Misty" by Dustin Nguyen himself, inspired by an Ella Fitzgerald performance edition.

Accompanied by Zachary Hommel and Parisa Tofigh on trumpet, Gwen Boros on horn, Lola Stevenson on bass trombone, and Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio on piano, Tim George will present a captivating program. The repertoire includes Leopold Mozart's Concerto for Alto Trombone, Joseph Jongen's Aria et polonaise, Op. 128, Sergei Rachmaninoff's Sleep, Op. 38, No. 5, Launy Grondahl's Concerto for Trombone, and Leonard Bernstein's Maria from West Side Story, arranged by Jack Gale.

This event is scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT, in the Regenstein Master Class Room at the Bienen School of Music, 60 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL 60208. Conductor, Kenneth Slowik will lead the orchestra through Mozart's Exsultate, Jubilate, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto, C.P.E. Bach flute concerto and Haydn Symphony no. 52.
