This is the audacious undertaking of the Jeune Orchestre Baroque Européen, which is reviving a little-known gem: Antonio de Literes's Los Elementos , the first Spanish opera to make its mark on the history of zarzuela. Composed around 1705 by this Majorcan choirmaster, then living at the court of Madrid, Los Elementos is much more than a simple opera: it is a celebration of the forces of nature, where each element expresses itself, clashes, and ultimately harmonizes to the rhythm of music that is both sophisticated and captivating. Originally written for five solo sopranos, this "harmonic opera in the Italian style" unfolds enchanting melodies, contrasting rhythms, and bold harmonies, all driven by a typically Spanish energy. The Jeune Orchestre Baroque Européen, conducted by Margaux Blanchard, takes hold of this score with passion and rigor, revealing all the richness of a music which, although composed more than three centuries ago, still speaks to our time.
