Ancestral utterance, heartfelt journeys, and vocal mastery blend to form Desiree Jaha’s sound, built with care over a decade of singing, songwriting, and performing. A craftsman of song, she shares her voice as a front woman, composer, and producer of live, recorded, and digital experiences. Honed in the rigor of jazz and sacred practice of soul, Desiree roots in song as a vehicle to connect and build. Extending her musical tradition into direct action, Desiree’s passion manifests in community care work. Across states and generations, she organizes with fellow musicians, youth movements, and local communities to craft networks of mutual aid and safety. She protects and honors the shared wisdom of her lineage of Black educators and community workers to build power as a matter of well being and survival.

An initiative of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, Armstrong Now unites world class artists to create new works inspired by museum archives. For this two-part performance, pianist and composer Luther Allison presents his inspired arrangements of Armstrong’s repertoire followed by original compositions that capture the spirit of Pops: blues, spontaneity, and swing. Part 1 spotlights Allison’s quartet and features special guests Catherine Russell, Bruce Harris, C. Anthony Bryant, Riley Mulherkar, and Ekep Nkwelle; part 2 spotlights Allison’s acclaimed septet.

Armstrong Signature: A Life In Jazz

At 23, Samara Joy is already setting the music world ablaze. Her 2022 Verve Records debut Linger Awhile has earned her two well-deserved GRAMMY wins, for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artist — the first time a jazz musician has won the prestigious newcomer’s award since Esperanza Spalding over a decade ago.

Hailing from a family of musicians in the Bronx with roots in gospel, Joy began her journey with jazz at age 17, winning Best Vocalist honors at Lincoln Center’s “Essentially Ellington” competition.
