The Tallis Scholars perform the music for which they are most beloved and acclaimed the world over. As Gramophone Magazine said of their Byrd recording, ‘it’s the sort of musical bliss which should never stop’. Tallis’s moving Lamentations are interspersed with two wonderfully contrasted settings of the Mass. Byrd’s has a reflective and intense spirit, reflecting the dangers that assailed his fellow Catholics worshipping in 1590s England. But Lassus’ Missa Bel’Amfitrit’ altera is a joyous, flamboyant and spectacular celebration. It is written for two choirs and includes some of his most electrifying, rhythmic and festive music.

Peter Philips directs The Tallis Scholars in music of the greatest beauty, written in times of fear and darkness. The 1590s saw an intensification of the persecution of Catholics in England, and any seeking to worship had to exercise the very greatest caution and discretion. William Byrd’s 3 settings of the mass were intended for clandestine use only – in extremis, they need just a handful of singers. Yet this dangerous undertaking inspired him to astonishing heights: for all its modest scale, this music is sublime and humane, magnificent as well as intimate. Peter Philips pairs Byrd with motets by Thomas Tallis and Philip De Monte.

The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt acts as a pivot within music history. On the one hand, he is one of the most successful composers of so-called New Music, even though he quickly distanced himself aesthetically from the experiments of the post-war avant-garde. On the other hand, medieval Gregorian chant – "music with soul, without harmony or meter," as he once said – served as his greatest source of inspiration. In this respect, it seems only logical that the celebrated British choir Tenebrae has now designed a program that presents Pärt's music in the context of composers from the Middle Ages and the present.

This lighthearted matinee featuring everything from classical to pop will make the walls at the venerable Semper Oper shake! The exceptional all-round musician Friedrich Gulda, who passed away in 2000, wrote a five-movement Concerto for Cello and Brass Ensemble, which he dedicated to Heinrich Schiff in 1980. It begins in a funky rock tone and ends with an Alpine folk melody. The solo part will be played by Jan Vogler, not only the Intendant of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele and an outstanding cellist, but also a former student of Heinrich Schiff, bringing matters full circle.

The Englishman William Byrd (c.1540-1623) was one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, who wrote music for voices and instruments in a wide variety of genres. His choral music for the Anglican church is particularly celebrated for its unusual beauty and significance. Our Columbus-based Fior Angelico joins choral ensembles worldwide in celebrating the 400th anniversary of the composer’s death. Their all-Byrd program will include portions of the composer’s Great Service, the last of four sets of canticles composed for services in the Anglican liturgy. The BBC writes that this elaborate work “stands alongside the best English sacred music of Purcell as the finest in the history of the Church of England.”

The Festival returns to the magnificent Carmel Mission Basilica presenting the exceptional Bach Festival Chorale in a program entitled “Cathedral Echoes.”  “This program is an emotional journey through time. It features music from 500 years of great British sacred choral music,” said Associate Conductor Andrew Megill. “From the energetic and otherworldly medieval carols through the sublime polyphony of Byrd and Tallis in the late 16th century, to the beautiful 20th century works inspired by this unique and profound tradition.”  One of the glories of Great Britain is its extraordinary choral tradition. For centuries, many of the world’s greatest choirs have come from England, due in large part to an extraordinary network of Cathedral choirs which required significant music every week.  Highlights include excerpts from Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, originally sung during clandestine services in private homes, and the 20thcentury masterpiece inspired by Byrd’s Mass, Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor, as well as Tallis’ profound Lamentations of Jeremiah, and the gorgeous motets by Stanford, Harris, MacMillan, and Britten which are some of the most loved choral works of all time, for singers and listeners and alike.  “The magic of the concert at the Mission is the way it incorporates the aesthetic and the beauty of the building itself,” said Andrew Megill.

Six étudiants, six amis, immergés en permanence dans la pratique individuelle et commune du chant, et qui un beau matin décident de mettre leurs capacités au service d’un répertoire plus… «fun»: celui de leurs loisirs, de leur âge, de leur époque. Depuis, le groupe a bien sûr évolué, mais la recette reste la même et le succès est intact; plus de 150 albums documentent leur immense répertoire. Après «Horizon» en 2012, «Black Humor» en 2015 et «Gold Standards» en 2018 (pour célébrer leur demi-siècle de scène), ils sont de retour à Saanen avec un programme à leur image: multicolore. Royal Blood – The King's Singers

During the Renaissance musical composition flourished, but it was a time of great change, fuelled by religious division. This programme traces music written by some of the English Renaissance masters over a period of 200 years, encompassing florid medieval-sounding pieces by Pygott and Cornysh, intricately woven polyphonic works by Tallis and Byrd, and the beautiful simplicity of Mundy and Tomkins.

Britten and Tippett shared many traits: both were pacifists; conscientious objectors during the war; homosexuals, at a time when it was publicly outlawed in Britain; and both shared a love of older forms of music. Drawing on one of Corelli’s concerti grossi, Tippett’s Fantasia views the Baroque through modern eyes in this passing from darkness into light.

The award-winning ORA Singers celebrates its 10th anniversary year with a choral highlights programme featuring key works from its first decade. Alongside Renaissance polyphony by Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, Victoria, Palestrina and others sit 10 contemporary pieces from its ground-breaking 100 commissions catalogue, including the world première of its 100th commission – In Manus Tuas by Brett Dean.

On Fancies and Goodnights, Richard writes: ‘As a curious traveller will collect objects that catch his eye, these short pieces are among the many that have caught my ear with their beauty, strangeness, and unpredictability. I have borrowed the title “Fancies and Goodnights” from a book of bewitching tales by the English writer, John Collier.’

This programme moves across the ages, from the intricate architecture of Renaissance polyphony by Palestrina, Lassus and Byrd, to the distinctive voices of the present day, including Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Blake Morgan. At its centre is the season of Advent: a time of waiting and anticipation. Ancient hymns and carols sit alongside modern reflections on the Christmas story, with familiar melodies appearing both in their traditional form and through the lens of contemporary arrangers. From candlelit devotion to moments of joy, The Gesualdo Six trace a musical path through the festive season.

O Magnum Mysterium

Vocal ensemble Siglo de Oro combine with instrumentalists from the Spinacino Consort in a programme that brings to life the traditional twelve days of Christmas through a lively combination of 17th century ballads, broadsides, dances and carols.
