William Grant Still’s Wood Notes is inspired by the rich nature of the American South, and Chelsea Komschlies’ piece Mycelialore melds fantasy with forest and neural networks in a piece commissioned by the League of American Orchestra’s Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The second half presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale”, a bucolic hymn to the countryside and nature. From stillness to dancing, and bird calls to storms, Beethoven’s ability to incorporate rural life in musical form is exemplified in the four movements of this work.

VSO at the Flynn: Pastoral Symphony

The Louisville Orchestra presents an evening of groundbreaking music. Showcasing the orchestra’s commitment to innovation, this program features three contemporary works from new and former Louisville Orchestra Creators Corps composers including Anthony Green’s Ev’ry Time I Blink, Chelsea Komschlies’ A Hidden Sun Rises as well as the highly anticipated world premiere of Lisa Bielawa’s Violin Concerto, a bold new commission written for violinist Tessa Lark. Complimenting these fresh voices is Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony, innovative in its own day for its exploration of nature’s changing landscapes in symphonic form.

Toulmin Commissioning Consortium: American Composers Orchestra and League of American Orchestras have established a 30-orchestra consortium to support commissions by 6 women and nonbinary EarShot alumni. Each composer will write a 6–8 minute orchestral work and develop an educational or community-focused program presented in partnership with each orchestra.

Dean Zhang, TSO’s exciting principal keyboard, makes his solo debut in one of the first concertos of the Romantic era. And it was Mendelssohn the conductor who led the first performance of his colleague Robert Schumann’s Symphony No 2, an astonishing work given the mental struggles that afflicted the composer. Maestro Gomez was so impressed by Chelsea Komschlies’ A Hidden Sun Rises, first heard at the TSO during the 2022 EarShot readings, that he immediately wanted to introduce this short work to a wider audience.
