With the rebellion against the Enlightenment’s rational order (and gathering clouds of war and and revolution in Europe and America’s colonies), art, literature, theater and music found its own way to interpret societal storm and stress.  The program focuses on works penned between 1760s and 70s in a short period referenced as Sturm und Drang. The KSO’s Associate Conductor Thomas Consolo foments the evening’s toil and trouble.

Our soloist for this concert is Jacqueline Rodenbeck, a Tucson native and winner of the  most recent Sphinx Concerto Competition. Jackie will perform one of the all-time favorite  solo works in the repertoire, Felix Mendelssohn’s violin concerto. This concerto gets off  to a fiery start, so appropriately enough, we’ll lead into it with Gluck’s “Dance of the  Furies” from his opera Orpheus and Eurydice.

Approaching a genius: With his "Journey to Mozart," Daniel Hope embarked on his first musical adventure into the Mozart cosmos in 2018. A world of sound that is always worth exploring and bringing to life anew. "His music has something otherworldly, untouchable, almost unattainable. And yet he was so human," says Hope. In his new version of "Journey to Mozart," the violinist approaches the Salzburg master by once again allowing his contemporaries to have their say: In addition to famous colleagues such as Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Glück, this time the program also includes a violin concerto by arguably the most extraordinary musician of Mozart's time: Joseph Bologne, the son of a French nobleman and a slave from Guadeloupe, made a career during the French Revolution both as a violin virtuoso and composer, as well as an accomplished fencer in the Légion des Américains et du Midi.

The myth of the Thracian minstrel Orpheus, whose singing not only moved humans and animals but also brought rocks and the gods of death to tears, tells of the inextricable intertwining of love and music. After his wife Eurydice dies from the bite of a poisonous snake, Orpheus descends into the underworld to beg for a second life for Eurydice. With his music, he appeases the spirits of hell, who then grant Eurydice her return to the world of the living. But on the way up, the couple must pass one more test: Orpheus is not allowed to look for Eurydice until the two have returned to the surface.

“She is a statue of beauty when standing or sitting: grace itself when she moves,” the 18th century English writer and artist Horace Walpole wrote about the legendary Queen of France Marie Antoinette. This colourful character from French history inspired the ballet by the French choreographer Thierry Malandain that premiered with his own ensemble, Malandain Ballet Biarritz, in 2019 in the very theatre that Marie Antoinette inaugurated on 16 May 1770 to mark her wedding to Louis XVI: the Opéra Royal Château de Versailles.

Marie Antoinette’s life in Versailles is central to Malandain’s ballet, which the choreographer has created to music by two of her contemporaries – Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck. The piece depicts her arrival at court, her wedding day, the opening of the opera house with Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Persée – as a ballet within the ballet – the attempted escape that would ultimately be her undoing and the infamous parties and balls associated with the Queen.

Returning opera to its origins, where human drama is the focus, where passion, strokes of fate and deep feelings are the focus, where music and words can respect each other as equal arts: these were the aims of an opera reform to which Gluck was committed. "Alceste" is a particularly impressive example, because with it Gluck succeeds in making the overture a part of the opera itself by preparing the audience for everything that is to come. From the particularly tragic key of D minor, from the countless sighing motifs, the constant downward movement and the painful dissonances, even the most hardened audience knows that something tragic is about to happen. Thankfully, the opera ends with a happy ending.
