Join us for an unforgettable evening with the Academy Chamber Orchestra as they present Dvořák's New World Symphony at the Music Academy of the West. Under the baton of the esteemed conductor Xian Zhang, making her Music Academy debut, this concert promises to be a highlight of our summer season. The performance will take place in the acoustically superb Hahn Hall on Saturday, July 6th, at 7:30 pm.

The program will feature a captivating lineup, starting with Dorothy Chang's "Northern Star," followed by Zoltan Kodály's "Dances of Galánta." The evening will culminate in Antonín Dvořák's iconic "Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, From the New World," a masterpiece that promises to transport the audience with its rich melodies and vibrant rhythms.

Xian Zhang, celebrated for her dynamic conducting and innovative programming, serves as Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and holds prestigious positions worldwide. Her leadership for this performance is eagerly anticipated, promising an evening of exceptional music-making.

Maestro Tausk concludes the season with Mahler’s deeply introspective Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), which reminds us the fleeting nature of life versus the eternity of the world. Plus, the overture from Mozart’s timeless classic The Magic Flute, and the return of Dorothy Chang’s Gateways, a concerto for piano and erhu, which thematically connects to the Chinese poetry from which Mahler drew inspiration for Das Lied von der Erde.

J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations is one of the most famous works in the Western canon. Our Variations on the Goldberg Variations reflects on Bach’s singular achievement through a contemporary lens. In the first half of the program, four living Canadian composers each write 7-8 variations for a total of 30 new variations, each preceded by a rendition of Bach’s original. The composers represent not only a diversity of aesthetics, but the newly-composed variations will alternate continuously between piano, harpsichord, organ and electronic keyboard. J.S. would have loved it!

The most famous love story ever written is told through the universal language of music in Prokofiev’s impassioned and romantic Romeo and Juliet. Dorothy Chang’s Northern Star points the way to a world of evocative soundscapes and kaleidoscopic color. And, Principal Cellist Brinton Averil Smith performs one of classical music’s most popular cello concertos—Dvořák poured his soul into it, and it includes some of his most heart-achingly beautiful music.
