The name Ottorino Respighi is often associated with his famous symphonic poems, among which the masterpieces of the so-called Roman Trilogy ( The Pines of Rome , The Fountains of Rome , Roman Festivals ) stand out, or with those compositions in which the musician engaged with the great traditions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. To fully understand the value of his mature works, however, it is also necessary to know his lesser-known youthful production, which includes the cantata Christus . Composed in 1898, when Respighi was still studying at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna with Giuseppe Martucci, the work was born at a time when the composer was learning to master orchestral writing and complex genres such as the symphonic poem. Although an early work discovered only recently, this cantata, whose texts were taken directly from the Vulgate , astonishes for its imposing character and the young composer's confident handling of choral masses. In them we can already see the archaic taste and modal writing that would characterize his later masterpieces.
