A Swiss composer born into a farming family, Paul Huber was raised by his adoptive Stolz family after his parents' death. She supported his desire to pursue musical studies. A student of Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Huber was organist at the Church of St. Nicholas in Wil and, from 1951 to 1983, head of the voice and piano department at the Cantonal School of St. Gallen. It was precisely in the post-World War II period that Huber achieved his first successes as a composer. His modest output, stylistically speaking, appears to be tied, as far as possible, to a tradition rooted in Bruckner. Among his works, this Concerto for dulcimer (a percussion instrument used at folk festivals in Switzerland) and strings , composed in 1993, stands out. Opening with a slow introduction, Andante sostenuto , of intense lyricism, the first movement continues with an Allegro giocoso in sonata form, in which virtuosic passages alternate with others marked in a lyrical sense. The emotional heart of the concerto, the second movement ( Variations. Adagio ), unfolds in the form of a theme and variations, while the third movement is a virtuosic rondo.
