Path at Sunrise, Masses of Flowers, by Margaret Brouwer, is a one movement work for orchestra, was commissioned by the Cleveland Women's Symphony for its 75th Anniversary Concert with a 2009 Commissioning Music/USA Award from Meet The Composer.   Visualize walking down a path in the quiet of early morning at sunrise.  The sun gradually rises on masses of flowers planted closely - jumbled together in a profusion of vibrant and delicate colors and myriad textures.  Picture walking through this beauty with a mix of personal emotions - sadness - acceptance - gratitude - and appreciation for the beauty of the flowers and the sun.

The Firelands Symphony welcomes back violinist Andrés Cárdenes, former concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony, known internationally as one of the world’s most outstanding violinists. Classical guitarist and composer Aaron Larget-Caplan searches for the life in music & music in life. He has performed in Europe, Russia, and Taiwan, premiered over 120 compositions, directs the Spanish music &amp; dance ensemble ¡Con Fuego!, while curating the New Lullaby Project, and the Now Musique recital series. His arrangements and recording of the music of John Cage are the first to be sanctioned by the John Cage Trust, are published by Edition Peters, and have received international accolades. His 11 solo albums have earned over 10 million streams, and include albums dedicated to J.S. Bach, John Cage, Spanish romantic and flamenco composers, contemporary composers, and his own music. Raised in Colorado he makes his home in Boston where is on the faculty at the New England Conservatory.

A concert for nature and classical music lovers! From Duparc’s gentle soothing Aux Etoilles–to the stars–to Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite, a constant of school music listening as well as the template for every film score about the American west. Mysterious Mountain by Hovhaness evokes a zen-like sense of calm. He shared, “mountains are symbols…like pyramids…man’s attempt to know God.” This piece holds the distinction of premiering live on TV with none other than Leopoldo Stokowski conducting.

Waverly Long, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Desirée Ruhstrat, will be joined by an ensemble of gifted musicians including Abigail Yoon and Lucy Kim on violin, Samuel Sun on viola, Naomi Aires, Noam Ginsparg, and Kailie Holliday on cello, with Philip Long and Nathan Canfield on piano. Together, they will present a program that spans the breadth of classical music, featuring works by Robert Schumann, Dobrinka Tabakova, Alan Hovhaness, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and Gabriel Fauré. Highlights include Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, Tabakova's Whispered Lullaby, and selections from Brahms' String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat Major, Op. 18.

Many composers’ music reflects their ancestral homelands. Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, the most popular concerto ever composed for guitar and orchestra, is inspired by the Royal Gardens at Aranjuez in Spain and features spellbinding Spanish guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas as soloist. Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 begins with the breadth and majesty of a Nordic landscape and ends with one of the most dramatic finales in classical music. Guest conductor Ankush Bahl leads The Phoenix Symphony in Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness’ popular and meditative Symphony No. 2, “Mysterious Mountain.”

This concert features a sumptuous menu of symphonic works, starting with the sonic flavors of India and East Asia in Alan Hovhaness' Symphony No. 15, "Silver Pilgrimage," followed by the world premiere of local composer Jon Magnussen's "Kau Mea Nui Progressions." Experience the intimate beauty of Brahms' "Two Songs" for Voice, Viola, and Strings, featuring HSO's principal violist Mark Butin and baritone Leon Williams. The program also includes Kurt Schwertsik's bite-size "Shrunken Symphony," leading up to the evening's highlight, Mozart's critically acclaimed Jupiter Symphony.

Conductor Dane Lam will lead this melodious banquet, promising an evening filled with breathtaking performances. For an enhanced experience, ticket holders are invited to join a special pre-concert talk in the auditorium at 3:00 PM.
