Let's think of the economy and the world of work as a series of numbers, statistics, and flowcharts. Between the 1980s and the 2010s, GDP as a share of corporate profits increased by eight percentage points, or one hundred and twenty billion euros per year. This wealth has been channeled into profits, not wages, income inequality has widened dramatically, and workers' incomes have plummeted. What humanity and what human cost lie behind the divide in a society that has defined the concept of work and value in terms of social accounting? To answer this question, Manlio Marinelli offers us a text that explores the thought of Karl Marx—specifically, that of his Early Philosophical Works—through the threads of a polylogue that probes the alienated and silently suffering humanity of contemporary society; that so-called liquid society that is, in fact, an oppressive quagmire within which the most formidable existential slaughter of the last fifty years is being played out.
