Puccini’s beloved Madame Butterfly, with its soaring score and unforgettable tragic story, returns to HGO in a revival of Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage’s acclaimed production. The opera’s diverse cast will be led by internationally sought-after soprano Ailyn Pérez, who returns to Houston as Cio-Cio-San, the young Japanese girl who marries American naval lieutenant Pinkerton, performed by tenor Yongzhao Yu in his role debut. As the tale unfolds, Cio-Cio-San, abandoned by her husband, raises their son while faithfully waiting for him to return to Japan. When Pinkerton finally reappears, bringing with him a new wife and seeking to take his child back to America, heartbreaking tragedy ensues. The production’s revival, directed by Jordan Braun, stars mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce as Suzuki, bass-baritone Michael Sumuel as Sharpless, bass William Guanbo Su as the Bonze, and tenor Rodell Rosel as Goro. Maestro Patrick Summers conducts.

Experience the chilling depths of psychological suspense with "The Turn of the Screw" at the Santa Fe Opera. This operatic ghost story, set against the shadowed corridors of a country estate, follows a young governess as she confronts unsettling mysteries and her own mounting paranoia. With music by Benjamin Britten and a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, this production promises to immerse audiences in a haunting narrative that explores the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

Running from July 19 to August 5, 2025, the opera is performed in English, accompanied by instant translation screens in both English and Spanish, ensuring an accessible and engaging experience for all. The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes, including a 25-minute intermission, providing the perfect evening of entertainment.

This co-production with the Canadian Opera Company, originated at Garsington Opera, features a talented cast including Jacquelyn Stucker as the Governess, Brenton Ryan as Peter Quint/Prologue, Christine Rice as Mrs. Grose, Wendy Bryn Harmer as Miss Jessel, under the baton of conductor Gemma New and direction by Louisa Muller. The creative team is rounded out with scenic and costume design by Christopher Oram and lighting design by Malcolm Rippeth.
