An incredibly popular annual jazz event, Indian Jazz Journey with Mahesh Kale and George Brooks is a captivating encounter between Indian classical and Western jazz musical traditions. Renowned vocalist Mahesh Kale, beloved for the intense beauty of his expressive voice, blends the intricate ragas and rhythms of Indian classical music with the improvisational spirit of jazz. His musical collaborator is George Brooks, whose soulful saxophone and deep understanding of Indian music create a dynamic dialogue between the two genres. Their melodies soar in unison over the rhythmic landscape of traditional Indian instruments and the Jazz rhythm section, creating a tapestry of sound that is both familiar and unexpected.

For Berkeley-reared tenor saxophonist Raffi Garabedian music is both a calling and a vehicle for exploring his family’s star-crossed past. A highly regarded improviser who’s performed and recorded with artists such as Brad Mehldau Trio drummer Jorge Rossy, bassist Ben Street, saxophonist Dayna Stephens, and R&B legend Johnny Talbot, Garabedian co-founded the innovative brass band Brass Magic.

Berkeley-based drummer, composer and bandleader Scott Amendola showcases his longstanding partnership with Hammond B-3 organ star Wil Blades for an evening of greasy grooves and head-spinning musical telepathy. Their most recent Royal Potato Family album, 2019’s Everybody Wins, features appearances by maverick saxophonist Skerik and Brazilian master percussionist Cyro Baptista, who join them on these dates.

ICMA is proud to collaborate with Stanford Jazz Festival to present Indian Jazz Journey, the wonderful musical collaboration between Indian classical music star Mahesh Kale and jazz saxophone virtuoso George Brooks. One of the most popular jazz events in the Bay Area, this annual concert blends jazz energy and Indian ragas and rhythms in a performance that transcends cultural and musical barriers. Mahesh and George will be joined on stage by amazing musicians, pianist Utsav Lal, tabla master Mayookh Bhaumik, guitarist Julian Coryell, and drummer Scott Amendola.
