Beethoven himself played the world premiere of his Third Piano Concerto. For him, it was not a problem at all, as he knew exactly what he wanted to hear. Quite the opposite for the conductor and musicians! He had not yet finished writing the notes for the orchestra, so the accompaniment was a real adventure. However, this performance was already a great success, and today the concerto is considered one of the most beautiful piano concerts of all time. The "Reformation Symphony" is also a musical monument full of radiance and depth. Majestic sounds meet festive hymns, while the famous melody "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" leads the symphony to its climax. This work is a passionate expression of faith and hope that touches both the heart and the mind.

In this concert, which concludes Kent Nagano's ten-year term as General Music Director, two key strands of his concert dramaturgy for Hamburg come together: the reference to tradition, namely to the Hanseatic Johannes Brahms, whose four symphonies the Philharmonic has accompanied in recent years in its Hamburg concerts as well as on tours - and the sound of our present in innovative premieres. A look back makes us think of Widmann's ARCHE, Dusapin's "Waves", Shepherd's "On a Clear Day" and many other outstanding new creations. In this concert - as both a crowning finale and farewell - a new symphony by the young Argentinian Alex Nante will be heard in his unmistakably dreamlike, spiritual sound language.

In this concert, which concludes Kent Nagano’s ten-year tenure as General Music Director, two essential strands of his concert dramaturgy for Hamburg come together. On the one hand the reference back to tradition, and the Hamburg-based composer Johannes Brahms to be precise, whose four symphonies have been performed by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra both in its Hamburg concerts and on tour in recent years. And then sounds of the present day, in the form of pioneering world premieres. A brief review conjures up performances of Widmann’s ARCHE, Dusapin’s »Waves«, and Shepherd’s »On a Clear Day«, to name just a few outstanding new works. This concert – a crowning finale and farewell at the same time – sees the premiere of a new symphony by the young Argentinian composer Alex Nante, in his inimitably dreamlike, spiritual sound language.

Although many of the stories about the explosion that began 20th-century music may be apocryphal, "The Rite of Spring" most assuredly debuted under stressful circumstances. The music, the choreography, the audience, the dancers, the subject matter—controversies abounded. But the young Stravinsky had nailed what was going to take unprecedented priority in music: rhythm. The suite from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet "Estancia" has become an international hit, but the complete work is rarely performed. Its story, spanning a single day, tells of a city boy who falls for a rancher’s daughter, set against the landscape of Argentina’s disappearing gaucho culture. Opening the evening is a world premiere by Argentine composer Alex Nante, commissioned as part of the Pan-American Music Initiative.
