Bendix contrasts lush melodies and contemplative moods, with fiery dances and driving rhythms in his masterful Symphony No. 3. Finally, watch the skill and artistry of the SOR orchestra in the exciting and celebratory Polovistian Dances! This rousing concert ends with an exciting flourish to our season and beyond!

Two masterpieces are featured in this concert by maverick composers. First, Poulenc’s Sinfonietta is a delightful and brilliant work of contrasts and beauty, with a musical language at once accessible yet uniquely Poulenc.
Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto pushed the boundaries of the Classical concerto and influenced the style and form for centuries. This piece goes beyond the traditional feature of a soloist with orchestra accompaniment and becomes a musical statement of heroic achievement. Be sure to hear our conductor’s pre-concert lecture as he shares insights on how these works are truly maverick masterpieces.

Musical Mavericks Concert

This World Premiere Event of works by Jake Heggie features three song cycles reimagined as fully staged chamber operas. These three moving narratives share one common theme: the deep human desire for love and acceptance. Festival Opera welcomes a world-class cast of West Coast artists with strong ties to Heggie’s operas and song repertoire. As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary Season, we are thrilled and honored to feature the collaboration and performance of Jake Heggie himself in this newly assembled work. This production is the result of General Director Zachary Gordin’s long standing relationship with Jake Heggie and his works, and of their conversations about what opera can be in this era of rebirth.
