As part of SFJAZZ’s weeklong Thelonious Monk birthday celebration, visionary guitarist John Schott leads a six-hour version of his evening-length meditation on Monk’s immortal 1943 signature composition “’Round Midnight” with a cast of exploratory musicians.

A former student of iconic bassist Gary Peacock and trombonist Julian Priester, the Seattle-raised Schott studied classical composition while honing his jazz chops in college, moving to Berkeley in the late 1980s and forming the renowned jazz/funk quartet T.J. Kirk with fellow guitarists Charlie Hunter and Will Bernard along with drummer Scott Amendola. He has since released a string of acclaimed recordings as a leader and worked with John Zorn, Tom Waits, Rova Saxophone Quartet, and Peter Apfelbaum.
