Distinguished pianist and NEA Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim remains at the zenith of his career—recently releasing an acclaimed album, Solotude, and celebrating his 88th birthday while on a world tour. A hero to the anti- apartheid movement, Ibrahim’s first album—released under the name Dollar Brand—was censured by the South African government. Years later, he performed at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration. Join us in welcoming Ibrahim and his band Ekaya to hear a true “modern master—steeped in blues, with a classicist’s touch and poet’s sense of phrasing” (The Wall Street Journal).

This SOLD OUT event, set for Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the iconic Harlem Stage located at 150 Convent Avenue, New York, promises an unforgettable experience in honor of Duke Ellington's 125th birthday.

The evening will feature an intimate performance centered around a single piano, placed in the heart of the room with seating arranged in the round, creating an immersive atmosphere. Esteemed pianist, composer, and educator Jason Moran, alongside legendary jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and other acclaimed pianists such as Bertha Hope, Joanne Brackeen, and Matthew Whitaker, will lead the audience through Ellington's mesmerizing compositions.

The performance will be followed by a riveting discussion between Moran and Ibrahim, delving into Ellington’s significant impact on music and culture. The night will conclude with a lively cocktail reception, offering attendees a chance to mingle and reflect on the evening's performances.

This benefit concert is not only a celebration of Harlem Stage's four decades of cultural contribution but also a tribute to the legacy of Duke Ellington. It is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, with additional support from the Diana King Memorial Fund presented by the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation.

The great Nelson Mandela described Cape Town-born piano legend and 2019 NEA Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim as “South Africa’s Mozart.” A performer, composer and outspoken chronicler of South Africa’s struggle with apartheid, Ibrahim became an international figure in jazz, whose music has always been a mixtures of influences from jazz and classical to gospel and traditional African music. His international career was jumpstarted by the great Duke Ellington, who saw the young pianist at a performance in Zurich and was instrumental in helping him secure a recording contract. Ellington remained a mentor to Ibrahim, who substituted for Ellington on a number of concert dates in 1965, leading the legendary composer’s orchestra. Since his auspicious beginnings, a staggering 50-album career followed, finding Ibrahim recording in settings ranging from solo to orchestral music and soundtrack work.

Dollar Brand, as he was known, was exposed to a melting pot of influences during his Cape Town childhood: African traditional music, Christian hymns, gospel tunes, spirituals, American jazz, township jive and classical music.

Works include that of visionary tango composer, Astor Piazzolla, a musical game changer of the 20th Century, who elevated the musical form of tango from the red-light districts of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to be performed on some of the world’s most prestigious concert stages. The use of saxophone in classical music is still a relatively new concept, and the instrument continues to be an uncommon fixture in the symphony – creating a unique and exciting experience for the audience.
