Even as a teenager, she met Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea, two of the greatest jazz piano legends. The Japanese pianist Hiromi is one of a kind, a superstar not only in her homeland. Her musical ideas are inspired by classical music, fusion jazz and progressive rock. Over the course of her 20-year career, the virtuoso artist and Grammy winner has surprised her audiences time and again, without any trace of (sonic) routine creeping in. Her latest project is big on groove, and together with the fusion jazz band Sonicwonder, specifically founded for this occasion, she takes the listeners into fascinating sonic dream worlds in the program »SonicWonderland«. This is hard to top when it comes to playfulness and melodic inventiveness.

This recital promises to showcase the extraordinary talent of American pianist Clayton Stephenson, known for his joyous charisma, expressive power, and natural ease at the instrument. As the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022, Stephenson has been hailed for his narrative and poetic gifts, offering interpretations that are fresh, incisive, and characterfully alive.

The program for the evening includes a diverse range of pieces that highlight Stephenson's versatility and technical prowess. Audiences will be treated to Isaac Albéniz's "Iberia, Book I," Igor Stravinsky's "Trois mouvements de Petrouchka," George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Summertime Variations" arranged by Fazıl Say, Art Tatum's "Tea for Two," and Hiromi Uehara's "Green Tea Farm" from The Tom and Jerry Show.

Ever since the 2003 release of her debut, Another Mind, Hiromi has electrified audiences with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Her new project “Sonicwonder” is an electrified 4-piece band with heavy groove, featuring Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Gene Coye on drums.

No jazz pianist alive is possessed of more explosive virtuosity or thrilling unpredictability than Hiromi – a GRAMMY-winning artist the All Music Guide calls “one of the most remarkable pianists of the past half century.” This season, she brings the Bay Area premiere of her groove heavy new Sonicwonder quartet of young giants featuring the masterful trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, French-born bass phenom Hadrien Feraud, and monster drummer Gene Coye, celebrating the release of her new album.

Our final concert of the 2023 concert season features a recital by pianist Clayton Stephenson, the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022 and a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. Now studying in the Harvard-New England Conservatory Dual Degree Program, Stephenson grew up in New York City and began piano lessons and age 7. He was accepted into the Julliard Outreach Music Advance Program for underprivileged children the next year and credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. Making his Tippet Rise debut, Stephenson will perform a program Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonata in E Major, Scriabin’s Sonata No. 4 in F-sharp Major, Beethoven’s Sonata Appassionata, a virtuoso transcription of a work by George Gershwin, an Art Tatum arrangement of Tea for Two, as well as Hiromi Uehara’s The Tom and Jerry Show.

Growing up in New York City, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7 and was accepted into the Juilliard Outreach Music Advancement Program for underprivileged children the next year, where he attended numerous student recitals and fell in love with music. At the age of 10 he advanced to Juilliard’s elite Pre-College program with the help of his teacher, Beth Nam. At Juilliard he studied with Matti Raekallio, Hung-Kuang Chen and Ernest Barretta.

In the process, she’s earned a reputation as one of the most explosive live performers in jazz history. Her many triumphs include an NPR Tiny Desk Concert that has racked up 2 million views; representing her native Japan at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo; and a Grammy Award for a collaboration with fusion hero Stanley Clarke.
