The acclaimed Moroccan-Hungarian pianist makes a welcome return to Wigmore Hall with a programme representing a fusion of cultures, with works by Spanish composers interspersing pieces by the Egyptian Gamal Abdel-Rahim (1924-88), the Lebanese Abdelhak Masri (1950-2007), the Cypriot-American Anis Fuleihan (1900-70) and the Moroccan Nabil Benabdeljalil (born 1972).

Internationally-acclaimed pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin, brings a program of works highlighting the dramatic range of  their waltzes (valses) from Granados to Chopin. Since his 2014 Silver Medal win in the Chopin International Competition, he has performed through North America and Europe in recital and soloed with major orchestras.

Students perform a variety of selections that they have studied with faculty during the semester. Student vocalists Sydney Cottrell (alto) and Melina Soberg (soprano) along with instrumentalists Matthew Cheong (guitar), Sarah Chianglin and Kevin Park (flute), Claire Tiunn Chang (clarinet), Amelie Yap (oboe), Gedi Weidig (violin), Ryan Butler (bass), Emma Constable, Tian Dong, Theo Kokonas, and Nick Payton (piano), plus the cello-piano duo of Elizabeth Sohn and Jisue Choi offering selections that they have studied with faculty. They will be assisted by pianist Kyungmi Kim.

Violinist Lun Li, cellist Jonathan Swensen and pianist Albert Cano Smit are all winners of Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions. Mr. Li and Mr. Swensen are also recent additions to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program. Mr. Smit won First Prize at the 2017 Walter W. Naumburg Piano Competition.

Focused on vocal chamber music and the art of song in recital, this program invites singers at the advanced student and beginning professional level for a week of intensive coaching, rehearsals, and workshops. The program is a tribute to the memory of Terrance W. Schwab and is supported by the Terrance W. Schwab Endowment Fund for Young Vocal Artists.

Curiously, it’s often been French composers who’ve expressed Spain’s essence, as in Chabrier’s España, inspired by folk musicians he heard there on holiday. Bizet showed similar flair in his opera, Carmen, the colourful Suite No.1 concluding with the famous Toreadors’ March. But to capture the country’s soul, turn to a Spaniard: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by an always welcome Hallé guest, guitarist Craig Ogden.

Music@Menlo is delighted to present A Spanish Journey on April 8 and 9, curated by violinist Kristin Lee. The two-day residency centers around gems of Spanish classical music, including de Sarasate’s fiery Carmen Fantasy, and rarely-heard piano trios. The first event (April 8) is an immersive exploration of Spanish music and dance, with demonstrations from a colorful combination of violin, piano, voice, and classical guitar. The second evening (April 9) is a concert performance of the vibrant works discussed, with a rich program of 19th- and 20th-century music.
