With his daring technique and elegant maturity, he has impressed not only the international music press but also the British royal family: In 2016, the Englishman personally performed at the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations. Following his magnificent performances at our Mozart Nights in 2022 and 2023, we are now pleased to welcome the pianist to a piano recital at Schloss Johannisberg with a program spanning several eras and inspired by dance.

Not just summer, sun, and sunshine, but flamenco, rhythm, and guitar sounds: Spain's culture has so many treasures to offer that this year's country focus is turning our attention to Southern Europe and celebrating music and dance with a Spanish Night. In this concert project, presented exclusively at the Rheingau Music Festival, Linus Roth and Anabel Montesinos present well-known works by Spanish composers. And, of course, one thing cannot be missing from a Spanish Night: flamenco. It will be diverse and passionate when Rocio Osuna and Juan Carlos Sánchez bring this cultural heritage to the stage, lending the Rheingau a southern European flair.

Acclaimed for her extraordinary lyricism, technique and versatility, multiple GRAMMY Award winner Sharon Isbin was named Musical America Worldwide’s 2020 Instrumentalist of the Year, the first guitarist ever to receive the coveted honor in their 59-year award history. She was inducted into the 2023 Guitar Foundation of America Hall of Fame and received their Artistic Achievement Award. Hailed as “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time”, she is the winner of Guitar Player magazine’s Best Classical Guitarist award, Germany’s Echo Klassik, Concert Artists Guild’s Virtuoso Award, the Toronto and Madrid Queen Sofia competitions, and the first guitarist to win the Munich ARD Competition. Isbin has appeared as soloist with over 200 orchestras and has given sold-out performances in many of the world’s finest halls across 40 countries, including New York’s Carnegie and Geffen Halls, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, London’s Barbican and Wigmore Halls, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Paris’ Châtelet, Vienna’s Musikverein, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Argentina’s Teatro Colón, and Madrid’s Teatro Real. The acclaimed Moroccan-Hungarian pianist makes a welcome return to Wigmore Hall with a programme representing a fusion of cultures, with works by Spanish composers interspersing pieces by the Egyptian Gamal Abdel-Rahim (1924-88), the Lebanese Abdelhak Masri (1950-2007), the Cypriot-American Anis Fuleihan (1900-70) and the Moroccan Nabil Benabdeljalil (born 1972).

Internationally-acclaimed pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin, brings a program of works highlighting the dramatic range of  their waltzes (valses) from Granados to Chopin. Bizet showed similar flair in his opera, Carmen, the colourful Suite No.1 concluding with the famous Toreadors’ March. But to capture the country’s soul, turn to a Spaniard: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by an always welcome Hallé guest, guitarist Craig Ogden.

Music@Menlo is delighted to present A Spanish Journey on April 8 and 9, curated by violinist Kristin Lee. The two-day residency centers around gems of Spanish classical music, including de Sarasate’s fiery Carmen Fantasy, and rarely-heard piano trios. The first event (April 8) is an immersive exploration of Spanish music and dance, with demonstrations from a colorful combination of violin, piano, voice, and classical guitar. The second evening (April 9) is a concert performance of the vibrant works discussed, with a rich program of 19th- and 20th-century music.

Young British rising-star pianist Amiri Harewood made his concerto debut as a teenager, and his sweeping programme features pieces from around the world. There are Russian preludes from Rachmaninov, including the famous Alla Marcia, and from Shostakovich including a stately sarabande and glistening fugue. From America, George Walker’s fifth sonata from 2003 condenses the form into a dense five-minute burst. From Nigeria, Joshua Uzoigwe’s rhythmic piece is inspired by a traditional dance to a river deity. Finally, Granados’s seven waltzes capture the essence of Spanish dance in dazzling, rich colours.
