An aura of transience shimmers through the energetic, dense dance piece "Last Work" by choreography legend Ohad Naharin. A feeling of clarity and reflection, as if in the center of a hurricane. The dancers fill the room with the movement language that is so characteristic of the Batsheva Dance Company: far-reaching bodies, deep lunges or quotes from traditional Israeli dance formations such as the circular Hora. Despite all its dynamism, "Last Work" is defined by a subdued calm and meditative basic tension, which is carried by the electronic sounds of DJ Grischa Lichtenberger. After the acclaimed revival of "Sadeh 21", Naharin returns with another task for the Hessian State Ballet.

Ballet and dance companies worldwide collaborate with Ohad Naharin. The Israeli choreographer has been a prominent figure in the dance world for many years. He developed a new approach to movement with his company, the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv. The approach demands a personal touch from the dancers and is known as the Gaga method. The method requires complete openness to embrace movement material beyond steps and musicality. Naharin's half-hour piece Minus 16 is a lively choreography performed by a large ensemble. The dancers move with exuberant joy and acrobatic boldness to the sounds of popular Cuban and Israeli music. The piece premiered at Nederlands Dans Theater II in 1999 and has since been a celebration of the joy of dance and joie de vivre that captivates both dancers and audiences. SAABA is the fourth work by internationally acclaimed choreographer Sharon Eyal to be presented by the Staatsballett Berlin. Another and completely new one of her mysterious universes unfolds in an unmistakable manner. This time, composer Ori Lichtik skillfully weaves pop into the musical composition, which alternates between genres. Sharon Eyal‘s unmistakable style of hypnotic, pulsating power also unleashes its full effect in this sound spectrum. During the performance, sudden and intense sound effects will be triggered, which may exceed a usual level. Detroit Opera House debut! An exceptional dancer and choreographer, Ohad Naharin has made Batsheva one of the greatest contemporary dance companies in the world. His new creation for the company’s 18 dancers, MOMO, premiered in Tel Aviv in December 2022 and is set to a soundtrack largely drawn from the album Landfall by Laurie Anderson and the Kronos Quartet. Developed in collaboration with Batsheva dancers and former company member Ariel Cohen, MOMO has two souls. One sends long roots to the depths of the earth, and the other is in a constant search for an individual and distinct DNA. Through it all, a shared passion of deep sorrow and beauty unfolds on stage.

In the company’s words, “MOMO has two souls. One embodies archetypes and myths of hardened, raw masculinity, and the other is in a constant search for an individual and distinct DNA. One moves within its own autonomous and independent force field, and the other is a constellation of elements that spin around the same nucleus – alternately drifting away and towards it, making room for necessary tenderness and catharsis.” MOMO is set to a soundtrack comprised mostly from the iconic Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet’s work, Landfall, with additional music by Philip Glass, Arca, and Maxim Waratt.   MOMO is co-created by Batsheva Dance Company dancers and Ariel Cohen with lighting design by Avi Yona Bueno (Bambi), set and props design by Gadi Tzachor, costume design by Eri Nakamura, and Sound design and editing by Maxim Waratt.
