International Record Review called star pianist Joyce Yang’s take on Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto “hugely enjoyable, beautifully shaped … a performance that marks her out as an enormous talent.” Now, the Grammy-nominated artist is bringing that thrilling interpretation of a concerto once thought to be unplayable to Bass Performance Hall. Dutch conductor Edo de Waart joins the orchestra for an all-Tchaikovsky program that pairs the concerto with Symphony No. 5 and its famous opening “fate” motif.

Principal Guest Conductor Edo de Waart leads this program filled with sounds that perfectly complement the beauty of December. Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe, adapted from a piece originally written for two harpsichords lost to the ages, was beautifully recreated to match Bach’s voice and intention. Its energetic melodies and harmonious duets have delighted audiences for centuries.

Having just celebrated his 80th birthday, Maestro Edo de Waart brings gravitas and expertise to the podium at the DSO. The concert features Argentenian pianist, Ingrid Fliter, known for her interpretations of Chopin, in Chopin’s virtuosic and colorful second concerto.

Followed by the ever-popular Pastoral Symphony, which Beethoven said “is more expression than painting of feeling” – an expansive and expanding walk through the countryside abounding with sounds of nature, using the many colors of the orchestra to tell a pastoral story, complete with babbling brooks, bird calls, a turbulent storm and a merry gathering.

Hailed by The London Times as a “violinist in a class of his own,” James Ehnes joins legendary conductor Edo de Waart with Prokofiev’s Spanish-inspired second violin concerto; a work that perfectly blends drama with technical virtuosity. On the second half, revel in the majestic power of the William J. Gillespie Concert Organ in Saint-Saëns‘ most popular symphony featuring a melody that was later adapted for film and the 1977 hit song “If I Had Words.”
