2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Minnie Riperton’s classic album Perfect Angel. At the time, Riperton was 27 years old, a veteran of the music industry. As a teenager, she sang background on sessions with Etta James and The Dells for the legendary Chess Records, but her “brightest moment” (Pitchfork) came with the release of Perfect Angel in 1975. The album is best known for the song “Lovin’ You,” which became a No. 1 Billboard hit and showcased her five-and-a-half-octave vocal range. Years later, BBC said, “with its extended chant to Maya Rudolph, her daughter, at the end, it is still affecting now as when it was first heard.”

Join us for "A Jazzy Evening with Concertmaster Karen Kartal & Friends," a unique chamber concert experience brought to you by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association. This special event is set to take place on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 7:00 PM, with a pre-concert talk beginning at 6:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, located at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Dive into an evening where classical music meets jazz, featuring the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Karen Kartal and an ensemble of talented friends. The program promises a fascinating blend of Johannes Brahms' Piano Quintet in F minor Op. 34, performed by an exceptional lineup including Emi Kagawa on piano, Karen Kartal and Sara Lee Cho on violins, Josh Ulrich on viola, and Dan Allcott on cello. The concert will take a jazzy turn with compositions by Knoxville-based saxophonist and composer Marcel Holman, inspired by Brahms and other jazz pieces, showcasing Marcel Holman on sax, Karen Kartal on violin, Jeanine Fuller on vocals, Sam Adams on keyboard, Joe Jordan on trumpet, David Slack on bass, and Kevin Krapf on drums.

This concert is not just a performance but an exploration of the intersections between Brahms and jazz, offering a fresh perspective on both genres.
