Countertenor John Holiday returns to Orchestra Hall to perform Carlos Simon’s orchestral song cycle Songs of Separation, a setting of texts by the 13th-century Persian Sufi mystic and poet Rūmī that meditates on loss, longing and the human experience of separation. Tracing a deeply expressive emotional arc—from grief and sorrow toward hope and affirmation—the work is brought vividly to life by Holiday, whose extraordinary, genre-defying voice has been praised by audiences and critics alike for its power, nuance and unmistakable individuality.

Young composers have been hailed as "the next Mozart" for  generations, but how did composers interpret Mozart’s legacy? Join  Parlando as it explores Mozart’s impact on classical music, culminating  in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri, the precursor to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus. The program includes Reynaldo Hahn’s charming Mozart Overture and Alfred Schnittke’s witty tribute to the 18th century, Moz-Art à la Haydn, before concluding with Rimsky Korsakov’s one-act opera, Mozart and Salieri, featuring Joseph Parrish as Salieri and Daniel McGrew as Mozart.

She has performed concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the UK; Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Philharmonia, and Victoria Symphony in Canada; Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, San Luis Obispo Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the USA; Kyushu Symphony in Japan, and Evergreen Symphony in Taipei. The early years of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of a remarkable new approach to composition. This program highlights works by four of the finest composers from this era. In the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor—one of the most renowned composers of his time—and Reynaldo Hahn audiences will hear genius at work. Known primarily as a violin virtuoso, Eugène Ysaÿe created music that is now regarded as pioneering. Finally, in the piano quintet of the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch, we find one of the most skillful, inventive, and riveting examples of the genre ever created.

Bestowing possibly the greatest music review in history, Joseph Haydn remarked to Leopold Mozart in 1785, “Before God and as an honest man, I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name.” In this program, you will hear the exact quartet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that inspired these words, preceded by one of Haydn’s finest works that inspired Mozart to dedicate quartets to the elder master. French composers Reynaldo Hahn, Paul Dukas, Vincent D’Indy, and Charles-Marie Widor contribute colorful homages to Haydn, for solo piano, written on the hundredth anniversary of his death. Concluding the concert is a bracing juxtaposition of the defining giants of Impressionism, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, bringing their mutual respect—and perhaps even rivalry—to life on stage.

This concert is preceded by a free afternoon Prelude Performance at 5 p.m. by the 2022 International Program artists. Prelude programs will be announced in May.

Louise Alder, acclaimed by The Times as ‘a terrific talent, combining a big lustrous voice with flawless intonation and a keen intelligence’, and Joseph Middleton take a voyage around the cosmos of songs inspired by ever-changing seasonal landscapes, moods and states of mind.

Former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and winner of the Ferrier Loveday Song Prize at the 2021 Kathleen Ferrier Awards, Helen Charlston has secured a gilt-edged reputation for her interpretations of Baroque and Early Music. The rich-toned mezzo is equally at home in German Lieder, French mélodie and the music of today. ‘She can give life to a line like few others; her diction is marvellous, and marvellously varied; everything flows with incomparable beauty,’ notes Gramophone.

Two pianists who love taking the road less traveled pay tribute to two artistic figures as prolific as they are allergic to banality. François Mardirossian brings to light the gems of the brilliant American outsider Louis Thomas Hardin, aka Moondog; and Jodyline Gallavardin celebrates the dazzling works of the poet Anna de Noailles, interweaving readings and rare works by her contemporaries (Déodat de Séverac, Lili Boulanger, Gabriel Dupont…).

French audiences flocked to hear Joseph Haydn’s music during the 1780s, thanks not least to the storming success of his six Paris symphonies. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, whose complete recordings of the composer’s piano sonatas have been showered with critical praise, traces Haydn’s lasting legacy in France with the distinctive works of Hommage à Joseph Haydn, an anthology of six pieces published to commemorate the centenary of his death in 1909.

Benjamin Britten and Sergei Prokofiev were both exiled in America when they wrote the works performed at this concert in the TS Eliot Theatre. Far from home, the British composer produced a time-stilling string quartet of graceful, mellow and humorous pieces. If the two composers sounded guarded in those works, Reynaldo Hahn will appear to burst loose in his piano quintet – a bold, brilliant and big-boned masterpiece of chamber music that comes with an irresistible, impassioned French sweep.
