Eleven weeks of music lie ahead when the 38th Rheingau Music Festival opens at the end of June in the basilica of Eberbach Monastery. Eleven weeks full of musical diversity and enjoyable conviviality. We think it's a good reason to celebrate! In 2025, the opening concert of the Rheingau Music Festival will feature a wide range of diverse sounds: works by Maurice Ravel, whose 150th birthday the music world and we too are celebrating this year, by Pablo de Sarasate, Franz Waxman, and Charles Gounod—namely, his solemn "Cecilia Mass"—will immerse the monastery in musical color this evening. In keeping with tradition, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, under its chief conductor Alain Altinoglu, will take to the stage, bringing the unique architectural monument to life in rich musical splendor at the opening of this year's Rheingau Music Festival.

Eberbach Abbey

In keeping with tradition, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt), under the baton of its chief conductor, opens the Rheingau Music Festival each year. The impressive acoustics of the Eberbach Abbey Basilica always create a unique musical atmosphere. The centerpiece of the 2025 opening concerts, conducted by Alain Altinoglu, is Charles Gounod's "St. Cecilia Mass." On June 21st at Eberbach Abbey, this will be paired with a Ravel-Sarasate-Waxman program featuring the Armenian violin virtuoso Diana Adamyan. On June 22nd at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, two works by Ravel will be performed with the Italian pianist Beatrice Rana. Alongside an internationally renowned trio of vocal soloists, the MDR Radio Choir, the hr-Sinfonieorchester's well-known and highly esteemed musical partner, will once again be featured in both programs.

Icarus' tragic flight - a metaphor for the fleeting intensity of life in which success and failure, freedom and death merge - also inspired Lera Auerbach. Her work "Icarus" invites you to experience music as a journey into the unknown: moving, imaginative, mythical. Even though Joseph Joachim, dedicatee of Antonín Dvořák's only violin concerto composed in 1879, never performed the work in public, it became a favorite among violinists and audiences. On this concert evening it will be interpreted by Diana Adamyan, who has had a meteoric career since winning the Yehudi Menuin International Competition in 2018. Peter Tchaikovsky's 3rd Symphony of 1875, in five movements and his only one in a major key, is often overshadowed by his later masterpieces. For conductor Vladislav Lavrik, this was a plausible reason to put it in the right light and perform it with the Jena Philharmonic in the second part of the concert.

Whenever it is important to convey the impression of enormous agility, of a rapid, glorious final spurt, by means of carefully selected music for moving images, the film and advertising industries like to use the well-known gallop from the William Tell Overture. However, this unspeakable habit creates a completely wrong impression of the entire overture to Rossini's last opera. Who would even think of expecting the same piece of art to contain the wonderful interplay of the solo cellos at the beginning, or the refreshing freshness provided by the English horn and flute after the great thunderstorm - or indeed the entire width of the canvas that Rossini illustrated for his magnificent overture?

Dudamel Conducting Fellow, Chloé Dufrense conducts a lyrical and surprise-filled concert. We feature Gabriel Fauré’s decadently beautiful Masques et Bergamasques Suite, a lush work filled with charm and an underlying pathos.  Mozart’s delightful “Turkish” Violin Concerto No. 5 is a youthful masterpiece that sparkles with lyricism performed by Armenian-born violinist Diana Adamyan, winner of the 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition. French composer Lili Boulanger’s D’un Matin de printemps (“Of a Spring morning”) starts the second half– a joyous piece filled with the electricity of the emergence of Spring. Haydn’s concludes with his last and greatest, Symphony No. 104, “London,” filled with grace, energy, beautiful themes, and humorous touches

Diana Adamyan is quickly gaining an international reputation as one of her generation’s most outstanding violinists. After winning First Prize at the 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition, the world’s most prestigious prize for young violinists, she went on to receive First Prize in the 2020 Khachaturian Violin Competition.
