Celebrate December with the VSO’s festive music at the Flynn and a visit from Santa! Join Music Director Andrew Crust, guest singers, and your Vermont Symphony Orchestra for a concert that delivers a joyful mood for the season. Enjoy favorites like Sleigh Ride and selections from The Nutcracker, a new commission by Vermont composer Michael Schachter inspired by a Jewish folktale, a rousing audience holiday sing-a-long, a musical reading of selections from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and more!

Ottorino Respighi’s compositional legacy rests on two main pillars. One is his brilliant and evocative orchestral tone poems, particularly the three depictions of Rome, past and present. The other is his reimagining of music from earlier eras, of which the best known are the suites of orchestrations of Renaissance pieces called Ancient Airs and Dances. The fact that neither of these are opera is rare for an Italian: As our 2019 program (for a performance of Pines of Rome) stated:

Holland Symphony presents two traditional Holiday Concerts of classics, seasonal classics and carols as a gift to the community as we celebrate the season.  Operatic soprano Michelle Areyzaga from the Chicago area joins the HSO sharing her gifts with us.  The two concerts are at 3:30 and 7:30 pm.

From Tchaikovsky’s Snow Maiden to A Charlie Brown Christmas, plus swinging Christmas favorites with the Dirty River Jazz Band and vocalist Faith Evangeline, this concert will have you tapping your toes and feeling festive. The New Braunfels Children’s Chorus adds their magic to the mix!

The wonderful Wisconsin-born soprano Emily Birsan -- now one of Chicago's indispensable classical artists -- returns following her exquisite "St. Cecilia Mass"  for another glorious French confection: Francis Poulenc's fabulous setting of the GLORIA, written in 1960 for the Boston Symphony....and once again, our LSO Assistant Conductor James Wilson will assemble a magnificent symphonic chorus for the occasion! A garland of classic American Holiday favorites graces the evening's first half, culminating in another brilliant return: La Crosse's own piano prodigy Andre Previn Peck, in Prokofiev's glittering First Concerto. John Finnegan's Christmas Sing-Along caps off what will be the perfect Holiday celebration.
